I know that in the last few months I touted how great the once-a-month injection Lunelle was.. but I wanted to let anyone, and everyone, know that there was a recall put out on it recently.

If you are currently taking this form of BC, please go to your doctor and discuss alternatives.

It's too bad, it has a lot of potential.

Lickerish, that kinda news almost makes me glad I ain't gettin' any. Almost. *sigh*

Thanks for the head's up. =)

Do you have link to an article? Why is it being recalled?

Pharmacia Corporation Announces Voluntary Recall

PEAPACK, N.J. (October 10, 2002) — Pharmacia Corporation announced today that the company is initiating a voluntary recall of Lunelle™ Monthly Contraceptive Injection (medroxyprogesterone acetate and estradiol cypionate injectable suspension) in prefilled syringes due to a lack of assurance of full potency and possible risk of contraceptive failure. As a precaution, Pharmacia is voluntarily recalling all Lunelle prefilled syringe lots currently on the market. Lunelle packaged in vials is not affected by this recall, nor is any other Pharmacia contraceptive product.

Lunelle is a combined hormonal contraceptive (like the oral contraceptive pill) that is administered to women by a healthcare professional as a monthly injection. A sub-potent dose of Lunelle may not be effective in preventing pregnancy. Women who have been using Lunelle as their contraceptive are advised to seek the advice of their healthcare professional regarding alternative methods of birth control and to use an additional barrier method of birth control (such as male or female condoms, diaphragm, or spermicide) until beginning a new form of hormonal contraception.

Pharmacia is committed to the integrity and safety of its products and is undertaking this voluntary recall with the full knowledge of the Food and Drug Administration. The affected lots were distributed in the United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands during 2002 and all physicians, pharmacies, clinics and wholesalers who received these lots are being notified.

For further information healthcare professionals may call the Pharmacia medical information service on (800)323-4204. Patients may call the Pharmacia patient information service on (888) 691-6813. You may also refer to www.lunelle.com.

Depo Provera, the 'every 3 months' shot.. is primarily progesterone, which depleted my estrogen, causing me to have normal periods one year, zero period the next, and period 365 days of the third year. It was ruining my body.

Lunelle is made up of basically the same ingredients as the pill, but in shot form that you get injected once a month. It was better for me because I do not well with pill schedules... and it helped add the hormones that Depo deleted, which gave me a regular cycle.

Thanks. It appears that Lunelle itself isn't the problem then, only the pre-filled syringes and a doctor's consulation is primarily to determine if the dosage was correct and take steps if it wasn't.

Your initial post sounded like there was some problem with Lunelle rather than with the packaging. (that and the lack of reference made it possible that this was another web hoax.)

It's odd that my doctors office didn't distinguish between vials and pre-filled. They just said it had been recalled and to schedule an appointment for an alternative method.

Sorry I didn't link it for you initally WH, I only was going by what my doctor said.. I hadn't read any articles.

I love depo...it actually is supposed to stop you from menstruating...I did. I loved it since I have such severe cramping that I spent a decent amount of high school absent because of period related pain (over 30 days a year). However, after you go off the shot it can take up to a year to get regular periods again.

Perhaps your doctor only uses the pre-filled syringes so he knows your one of thoe affected by the recall.

I just wanted a link for others -- lunelle doesn't make any difference to me personally, but you didn't give any kind of source and I'm extremely leary of sourceless information on the internet.

This is definitely information that needs to be spread, and the link does make it much more credible.
