Reality of Coronavirus Not Allowed To Rain on Donald Trump's Parade

"Once again the President retaliates against an acting Inspector General whose reports
he doesn't like," Donald K. Sherman, deputy director of Citizens for Responsibility
and Ethics in Washington (CREW), wrote Saturday on Twitter.

Once again the President retaliates against an acting Inspector General whose reports
he doesn’t like. Congress needs to strengthen protections for IGs. They also need to
make sure acting IG Grimm isn’t immediately sidelined like ICIG Atkinson was.

"Don't let anyone tell you that the Trump administration is wholly incompetent,"
Sherman added.

"They are REALLY good at undermining independent oversight
and democratic norms. Perhaps the best ever.
Especially during The #CoronavirusPandemic."

Donald Trump's four-step plan to reopen the US economy –
and why it will be lethal

Robert Reich

The president and his allies are hiding the facts and pretending ‘freedom’ conquers all.
As a result, more Americans will die

3 May 2020

Trump's 4 step plan

Step 1

Remove income support, so people have no choice but to return to work.

Step 2

Hide the facts.

Step 3

Pretend it’s about “freedom”.

Making this about “freedom” is absurd. Freedom is meaningless for people
who have no choice but to accept a job that risks their health.

Step 4

Shield businesses against lawsuits for spreading the infection.

The Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, insists that proposed legislation
giving state and local governments funding they desperately need must include
legal immunity for corporations that cause workers or consumers to become
infected.

“We have a red line on liability,” McConnell said. “It won’t pass the Senate without it.”

Why is Trump insisting that meat-packing plants stay open despite risks?

May 1, 2020

The president said he is protecting companies from liability –
but employees are afraid of sick leave and filing for workers’
comp or unemployment

“They have to threaten people. These ‘don’t even think about it’ orders fit
into a system that marches workers to their deaths,” Case said.

American beef, pork, and chicken, does not go to Americans, they get sold

Trump killed off the family ranches and farms, so that Mega Meat corporations
could collect all of the profits.

America has Mexican and South American immigrants processing meat under
unsafe conditions for China, on American soil. No healthcare, no assistance,
no unemployment insurance. Living under threat of deportation. Trump's rules.

Enormous meat factory farms are poisoning and polluting American soil and water.
Trump got rid of regulations that kept The People safe. Trump's EPA, Trump's FDA.

All of the eggs are in Trump's basket, and it shows. Independence and freedom ? Trump sold them.

Fauci spent more than an entire workweek of time sitting around during the White House "coronavirus briefings."

May 4, 2020 at 4:25 PM EDT

Late Friday night, the White House informed House Democrats that Anthony S. Fauci,
the country’s leading infectious disease expert, was simply too busy to offer testimony
on Capitol Hill.

The House Appropriations Committee had requested that Fauci appear before the panel
to discuss the coronavirus pandemic and the administration’s efforts to contain it and
limit covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...nt-waste-his-time-testifying-before-congress/

Yeah, Trump muzzled Dr. Fauci, and had Dr. Debbie Birx lie for him.

Trump lets slip the real reason he’s not letting Dr. Fauci testify before the House

May 5, 2020

Tuesday, President Donald Trump dropped the pretense and made the truth quite clear.
He doesn’t want Fauci testifying in the House because Democrats control the chamber.

Trump told reporters when asked about the decision-
“The House has put on a committee, an oversight committee, of Maxine Waters,
and Maloney, and the same people. And it’s just a set-up."

"But Dr. Fauci will be testifying in front of the Senate."

There’s no justification for denying the House its right to get testimony from
administration experts, whose salaries are appropriated by lawmakers.

And Trump’s new remarks make it clear that there’s no principled objection to the testimony;
he’s just doing whatever he can to block oversight from committees led by the Democratic
Party. For any other president or administration, this would be a galling admission. But
since so many outrages come from the White House each day, this one will likely be
forgotten swiftly.

https://www.alternet.org/2020/05/tr...ot-letting-dr-fauci-testify-before-the-house/

When the White House released its “Opening Up America Again” guidelines last month, a lot of people noticed that something was missing: details on how to do that safely. Now, the Trump administration has blocked the release of a detailed guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The 17-page “Guidance for Implementing the Opening Up America Again Framework” was supposed to be published last Friday—but then, an unnamed CDC official tells the Associated Press, scientists were told it “would never see the light of day.” And it’s reportedly not because the document had errors or was incomplete, but because, with Donald Trump pushing reopening no matter what, the White House doesn’t want to release detailed guidance.

A “person close to the White House’s coronavirus task force” told the AP that releasing detailed guidance for opening specific areas of the economy is a “slippery slope,” supposedly because different areas of the country are affected differently by coronavirus. But the science isn’t different from place to place, even if the infection levels are, and the guidelines for safely reopening a restaurant in New York City and Albany, Georgia, should be the same. That’s an area where the White House’s “Opening Up America Again” guidelines left questions.

”You can say that restaurants can open and you need to follow social distancing guidelines. But restaurants want to know, ‘What does that look like?’ States would like more guidance,” the chief medical officer of the Association of State and Territory Health Officers told the AP. Those are blanks that the CDC’s “Guidance for Implementing the Opening Up America Again Framework” could have filled in. The shelved CDC report called for restaurants and bars to avoid salad bars, buffets, and drink stations, to space their tables six feet apart, and to have sneeze guards at cash registers. Phone apps could be used to replace buzzers for people waiting to be seated. And it had similar guidance for schools, churches, summer camps, day care centers, and more.

If there’s one thing Donald Trump has made clear, though, it’s that he doesn’t want the public thinking about any of this in too much detail. “Hopefully that won’t be the case” that reopening will cause deaths to rise, he said Wednesday, but “It could very well be the case.” It will be the case, and he doesn’t want us thinking about how many deaths, or how directly they will be a result of poor reopening decisions.

Asked if he considered wearing a mask while with these 90+-year-old veterans today,
Trump says no because he was "far away" from them and "plus the wind was blowing
so hard and such a direction that if the plague ever reached them, I'd be very surprised."

President Trump said Friday he didn’t wear a face mask while honoring elderly
World War II veterans—just one day after his personal valet tested positive for
the coronavirus—because he was “very far away from them” and “they’re so pure,
it will never happen.”

Six members of Mr Pence's team were abruptly taken off his plane, Air Force 2,
after it was held on the tarmac outside Washington, DC for over an hour on Friday,
as he prepared to travel to Iowa to meet religious leaders.

The staff members had had recent contact with Mrs Miller, according to an unnamed
US official cited in the media pool report. The president and vice-president had not.

Trump lies.

A lot.

However, unlike so many of his other lies, a lot of which are merely laughable claims of what an “incredible” job he’s done in his 40 months in office, his virus-related lies have serious impacts, encouraging people to take action and inaction directly injurious to their health and the health of others.

Some of these childish lies merely give the idea that his policies are working and the White House response is the best that could possibly have occurred.

Some bizarrely say it’s all somehow President Obama’s fault.

One of Trump's lies (oft repeated) is the claim that the United States has done a terrific job of testing for the virus, better than any other nation, better, he says, than all the other nations put together. Wretched nonsense, all part of his disinformation campaign:

In latest virus briefing, Trump repeats that U.S. has tested more than any other nation & then says more than all the other nations combined. Another lie: About 23 million tests worldwide so far. U.S. has done just under 20% of those. As for per capita testing? The U.S. ranks 41st.

The numbers have changed since then. But the results are the same, yet Trump keeps making the claim. In fact, the United States has performed 8.9 million tests for the virus and continues to add another 200,000 a day, something epidemiologists say is, at best, half of what needs to be done.

That may sound like a lot. But total testing worldwide (as measured by Worldometers) is 48 million. That means the U.S. is still testing at about a fifth of the world total as opposed to more than all other nations combined. More telling is the testing figure that matters most: The United States still ranks 38th in per capita testing worldwide.

This, obviously, is small potatoes compared to Dr. Trump repeatedly claiming it’s easy for anyone to be tested even as front-line healthcare workers and other Americans say there aren’t enough tests available. Not to mention the lie inherent in prescribing unvetted drugs and suggesting that drinking bleach or injecting disinfectant could be effective, statements that ensured some people would try out these techniques.

No telling what he’ll come up with next.

Filmmaker compares reopening the country to reopening Jurassic Park in brilliant essay:
‘Life finds a way’ — unless you’re eaten by a velociraptor

May 10, 2020

This essay by engineer, filmmaker and writer Carlos Greaves is titled
“Sure, the Velociraptors are still on the loose, but that’s no reason not to reopen Jurassic Park”

This is how the essay begins –

Hello, Peter Ludlow here, CEO of InGen, the company behind the wildly successful
dinosaur-themed amusement park, Jurassic Park. As you’re all aware, after an
unprecedented storm hit the park, we lost power and the velociraptors escaped their
enclosure and killed hundreds of park visitors, prompting a two-month shutdown of
the park. Well, I’m pleased to announce that, even though the velociraptors are still
on the loose, we will be opening Jurassic Park back up to the public!

liability laws.

Sure, the Velociraptors Are Still On the Loose, But That’s No Reason
Not to Reopen Jurassic Park

- Carlos Greaves

As some of you know, Dr. Ian Malcolm, our lead safety consultant, had recommended
that we wait until the velociraptors have been located and contained before reopening
the park, so he wasn’t thrilled when we told him the news. I believe his exact words
were “you were so preoccupied with whether you could reopen the park, you didn’t
stop to think whether you should.”

That said, you’ll be pleased to know that, rather than double down on our containment
efforts, we’ve decided to dissolve the velociraptor containment task force altogether,
and focus instead on how we can get people back into the park as quickly as possible.

The life expectancy of a velociraptor is only 15-20 years, so we’re confident that
these attacks will eventually run their course.

In the meantime, will more visitors die? Yes. Will more Jurassic Park staff die? Yes.
But know that their sacrifice will not be forgotten — we plan to erect a small plaque
dedicated to all of the velociraptor attack victims in the far back corner of the gift shop
next to the T-shirts that say I SURVIVED A VISIT TO JURASSIC PARK AND ALL I
GOT WAS THIS LOUSY T-SHIRT. It’s the least we could do.

So pack your suitcases, and get ready to be reacquainted with the newly reopened
and only slightly more dangerous, Jurassic Park!

Trump abruptly ends press conference after clash with two reporters

Trump ends the briefing suddenly on a very sour note.

Asked by CBS White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang why he is so fixated
on comparing the US’ testing capability to other countries as opposed to focusing
on the lag that still exists here, Trump snapped: “Maybe that’s a question you should
ask China. Don’t ask me, ask China that question, okay?”

Trump then called on CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, who allowed Jiang a moment to follow up.

Jiang, who is Asian-American, replied to Trump: “Sir, why are you saying that to me,
specifically? Why are you asking me this?”

“I’m saying it to anybody who would ask a nasty question like that,” Trump told her.

“That’s not a nasty question,” Jiang said.

Then, as CNN reporter Collins started speaking, Trump abruptly cut her off with
“No, it’s okay” and “next.”

“I just wanted to let my colleague finish,” Collins said. As Collins continued to try
to ask her questions, Trump suddenly ended the press conference, saying
“Thank you very much” and walked away from the podium.

May 18, 2020

Ten chefs and executives, representing chains as large as Burger King and restaurants
as rarefied as Per Se in New York City, brought their economic concerns to the meeting
as the president and many governors continue to push for reopening businesses, including
the nation’s estimated 650,000 restaurants. All the hospitality industry representatives were

that North Carolina chef-restaurateur Katie Button represent the group. IRC co-founder
Tom Colicchio, the man behind Crafted Hospitality, says someone at the White House
rejected her. He didn’t know who.

“We wanted a woman up there, and they said no,” Colicchio told The Washington Post.

‘He has to get back to his life’: Trump looks past crises to resume his routine

June 11, 2020

(Presiderp) Donald Trump-
is planning to resume his pre-pandemic routine, arguing it will send a positive message
that the country’s problems are under control.

Trump is scheduled to fly to Dallas on Thursday for an event on the nation’s racial disparities
and a $10 million fundraiser and then head to his luxury golf club in Bedminster, N.J.

During the weekend, Trump will deliver a commencement address in New York.
Next week, he will headline a campaign rally next week in Tulsa, Okla.
And the next month he will view fireworks in South Dakota.
He also expects to hold rallies in Florida, Arizona and North Carolina
in the coming weeks. Plans are also being made for larger fundraisers
in the Hamptons, as well as in Tampa the first week of July and in
Mississippi the last week of August.

Trump now is eager to create a contrast with Biden, who has largely remained secluded
in his Delaware home since spring. The (presiderp) hasn’t headlined a fundraiser in months
but he will appear at two small ones this week in Texas and New Jersey expected to bring in
more than $16 million combined.

Trump scrapped plans to spend last weekend at Bedminster amid the nationwide protest
against police brutality. Small groups of demonstrators sometimes gather outside when
Trump stays at the New Jersey resort — more than 600 acres of rolling countryside that
