My idea for this is simple -- fuse together the plot of Ready Player One with Sword Art Online and go from there. Our characters still have avatars within the OASIS, but they connect with NerveGear like in SAO, so that their in-game experiences are more realistic. There is also a great amount of Augmented Reality mixed into everyday life with special contact lenses and holographic advertisements. Very much a cyberpunk feel.
At first our characters are just having fun, forming a party online to enjoy a series of games within the OASIS, from arenas to MMO raids to battle racing. But eventually, we become targeted by Innovative Online Industries, and find ourselves pursued by corporate black ops. From here the story can go anywhere.
