Readers are funny

I just read some feedback about one of the stories that I wrote.

The reader seemed to be upset because the male character was being used by the two women characters, in the reader's opinion. The reader rated me a 1 for the story. I'm taking his/her rating as a 5, because the reader seemed to really get into the story. It caused some emotion.

If it was just a sucky story, most I believe wouldn't finish reading it. I know I just blow off stories I don't like and go to the next.

Bad votes that are based on story content are really votes that you are doing well. You moved them, they finished it and got angry. Anger is an emotion, perhaps not the one you were shooting for, but it is a victory nonetheless, if you judge your work in part by the response it provokes.

I just got a piece of (anonymous) feedback.
In one of my stories, the brother of the main woman visits
the family of the main man. The brother is a (young)
lt (jg). He says, among other outrageous things reported
by the POV character, "Lieutenant JG -- equivalent to
the army rank of colonel, sir."
The feedback corrected this "error" in my story. He told
me that it isn't an equivalent rank. I find the letter
much funnier than the original joke.

His 'fix' for me was..."Should take a shotgun and shoot her and all those bastards who used her. Nothing but trash. Save a round for yourself too...wimp."

After that I had to think for a bit before ever opening some feedback. Usually the comments are about my style, or how the characters interacted. Every once in a while though...I get one from some poor soul who is convinced that I wrote verbatim an actual happening in my life.


Emotions are behind many feedbacks and sometimes I am attacked for the directions my character went in. I find it...very interesting.

I wrote a short science fiction story some years ago, and got a few responses from readers that read like "I know of no computer that can do what yoy are describing." and "You know that there is no such vaccine as the one you write about. Don't make things up!".

This was on an SF mailing list.

the stories aren't real?

We create a perfect environment, perfect partners, perfect sex encounter, perfect emotions, perfect situation, perfect organ size, perfect tightness, perfect timing.......

A reader asked about mom finding out about the tryst, and then joining dad and daughter in incest, but was written as if it were real.

Even had a reader comment about how good a lover I must be. Really appreciated that. If I just could match the quality and quantity of my character.

More, more, keep the stories real I guess.......

This is an excellent topic. I often get mail asking me if I really am involved in an incest relationship with my brother. Come on folks this is all fantasy. I actually had to write on my profile that I am not into incest in real life. Still with that, people ask me the same question which agravates the heck out of me.

Another distrubing letter I got was when I my halloween story "Freddy and Jason" was published. Some perosn which was supposedly two girls wrote me a really rude e-mail saying that I should be ashamed of myself for condoning rape and that I need to stop writing. Hello! the topic of the story was clearly NON CONSENT! If I see a subject I don't like, I move on I don't sit there and read it! Oh man some people need to lighten up and realize all is fantasy and fun.

Haha.. I'll let MG or someone else give you the run down on L&L, Jess. Suffice it to say they are well known to us here at the AH. I'll say no more than that

I'm thinking maybe I should write a non-consent story, maybe throw in a sheep or a garderobe or two, maybe that would get me L&L feedback.

I've gotten an e-mail feedback from these two on every story that I have submited on this site. LOL The latest being in the Group catagory. So add that, and Loving Wives as well. I considered each of their Flaming e-mails as good feedback.

I get a lot of feedback where the reader's think, or hope that I am actually writing an ongoing documentary of my own life. I could suppose that by making it seem so real to them, that I've brought them right into the storry with me, is why I get flamed so often. And yet, I don't have a single story, or poem rating under 4.3 as of this writing. And considering that the votes are an average rating system, then I feel that Flaming my work is probably going to be an ongoing thing here to keep me from winning any of the prizes on this site. In fact I'd be very interested in hearing from any of the AH authors here who have won any of the prizes other than the servival contest.
