Hey guys... I'm looking for a few good "mano e mano" fight scenes to read since I'm struggling to write my own.

Anyone write one you're really proud of that you'd recommend me reading?

Read any good ones lately?

Thanks for the help.

I'm proud of the fights in Chaos Theory although they're short and mostly understated. The first one opens the story but might not be what you mean by "mano e mano." The second chapter has a fight about halfway through involving first one guy against several people. In the final chapter aftermath of a fight is shown without the fight itself and another is suggested by a dance.

If they're not what you're looking for I can offer a few pieces of advice. Length of the fight is one of the most critical aspects. A highly realistic fight between two trained fighters will usually be extremely rapid. On the other hand drawing out the fight and detailing every move is dramatically cinematic and to many people will usually be slightly easier to believe for readers that watch MA movies.

Extreme differences in power can be shown the same way and reveal a great deal about the character. Ending the fight in one strike, dodging for a long time, ignoring every hit, walking away or fleeing can all be used to show how the character thinks. For example walking away could be dismissive or an attempt to spare the other fighter. Dodging can be a way to humiliate the other person or show that the fighter does realize what he's capable of (A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony uses the second idea for the length of an entire novel, not revealing the truth until near the end).

That ended up being much longer than I expected. Hopefully something in there is useful.

There's pretty much a sword battle ( or at least a friendly spar ) in every chapter of "Blackhawk Hall" Everything from a frightened young woman with a dagger up to a battle between the quick-footed Duchess and her powerful husband wielding the two-handed instrument of destruction he fondly calls "Skullroller"

A lot of it could very well be adapted to hand-to-hand, because there's a lot of that mixed in with the blades the way Mindblind and Christi fight.

Shameless plug for me to get off my ass (or on it) to finally read Blackhawk Hall, too. :D

I figured you'd have a good one or two in there for me. Sigh. Oh well, it's for research.

Got a favorite?

You're welcome! I liked how the author kept the tension going back and forth so the reader kept guessing if it was going to happen or not.

Good luck with your fight. :)

There's not any one fight I prefer over the others. Depends upon what you're looking for, really.

( The story is badly in need of an edit, as well. I've edited it once before, but I've learned a lot since then )

The spars probably line up more with what you need for research, because the fights with the monsters are so fast-paced and one-sided that the miserable critters barely have time to register what's going on before someone cuts them down *laugh*

One suggestion I can make for certain, although its not on Lit, is R.A. Salvatore. Any battle he writes is perfectly paced, and so well described that you can see every cut and parry in your head in perfect detail.

Isn't he the guy who wrote about Drizzt Do'Urden and friends? I think I read the first or second series in high school.

That would probably be a nice read, too. :D

That's him.

Thanks love.
Just googled him, too.

Maybe it's time to hit Borders or something. Specially since I'm a little under the weather. Everyone needs a good fantasy book to read when they're sick. Problem is I haven't read the books since high school which was.... urhm... a long time ago and now he has all these new books out. Sigh. All in the name of research.

*avoids shameless plug of own work*

I bet it wasn't that long ago. Salvatore's plots always seemed a little bit hokey to me but they're great light reading. The various Xanth books are fun reading and set in a similar (if humorously warped) setting to other high-fantasy type novels.

He's mentioned in the second post of this thread. It's at the end of an analysis of ways a fight scene can be used to say more about a character than that he or she kicks ass.

*pouts childishly*

But... you said "A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony" which, even though I have read my share of fantasy, I'm not great at remembering names. How was I supposed to know that was in the Xanth series?

Of course, I've googled it since then and have realized my terrible error.

Shock. I've never read any of those. I guess I got caught up in other writers and didn't get to it. I think I kinda stayed away from "Forgotten Realms" and then never quite got hooked onto Piers Anthony. Perhaps I should re-evaluate. Don't pout your lips will get stuck that way, as my mom used to say.

*blows a  *

But thank you. :)

And by the way... I used your "dodging" technique too. So there!

Best way to remember he wrote Xanth is that his name is Pier-Xanth-Ony.

Woohoo!

There is a really terrific series by an author named "Tecunuman" that has some really good one on one fight scenes between two women. The first is, "Maggie's Epiphany," and the second is a new one just this week called "Maggie's Multicolored Perfection." These are really well done.

Regards... Mysti
