Ratcliffe on Soar coal fired power station was put on ticking over mode this week with just one of its 4 500 megawatt units ticking over. It will stop altogether in 5 months time and that will be the end of the last coal fired power plant in the UK. For 56 years it produced 2000 megawatts of electricity and 10 million ton of CO2 annually. Coal as a power source is finished in the UK; how about your part of the world, does it have any future?

Mixture of natural gas and "green" methods here. I have always been a fan of solar in Texas and wind in some parts of Texas. Sort of like the longstanding turbines in Indio, CA if you find the right location they work great. However, the Biden-Obama crew does not believe that land or people differ between locations.

Coal is convenient to burn in nations that have it. It's too heavy and low energy to be worth long transport. Some wars might be fought for remaining coalfields near borders.

Ontario shut down the last of it's coal plants in 2014. Several were converted to Bio-mass. While being a good move environmentally, the logistical approach used was a complete disaster. However the lights stayed on, but the cost of electricity soared like an Eagle....

That's only true to a limited extent. The two greatest steaming (power Station) coal exporters are Indonesia and Australia. Their markets are mainly in China, Japan, Korea - all long distance. Transport is mainly by bulk carriers at sea. The Indonesian mines are close to the sea. Australian mines are further away but located in very dry desert conditions where land is cheap. More importantly China has its own problems; its mines are in the far North, but its industry is in the far South. All of their big rivers flow east /west, they flood, and are expensive to build bridges over. Southern Hemisphere coals from Indonesia Australia, India and South Africa tend (not always) to have a higher calorific output of heat /ton burned than northern Hemisphere coals
