Might note (and few seem to know this) that, since the United States signed the Berne Convention in 1988, you can be fined for slapping a copyright symbol on your writing without actually applying for and holding a formal copyright. I doubt the government will go after anyone in the context here--but it's not an only-feels-good protection anymore, it's a copyright law violation.
