I'm actually quite the techno-peasant when it comes to photoshop and other image/photo software. I'm really just trying stuff randomly, trying to figure out what I can do with it.

Basically, I go with my general philosophy for all thing computer related:

1) if you can think of something you'd like a software to do for you, someone has already thought about it before you, and made a software that does exactly that and better;

AND

2) if you don't know how to do what you want to do, just look around and try different stuff. The computer won't explode in your face if you make a mistake, and that 'save' function is your friend.
