The recent shooting by the KC Chiefs player, Belcher, has reignited the 'gun' debate. Although this particular incident does not qualify as a rampage shooting, to hear the proponents of gun control you'd be led to think otherwise.

Some facts;

The average number of people killed in mass shootings when stopped by police is 14.3

The average number of people killed in a mass shooting when stopped by a civilian is 2.3.

A 600 and some percent difference in fatalities. And not in favor of the authorities.

I'm all for whoever wants guns, but they scare me. I don't want to shoot one. So I guess if someone is planning to shoot me - I'm dead!

Odds are I will shoot back and first if there is clear and imminent danger of loss of life... mine or not.

At least so far.

One never knows how something will go down.

They are to be respected.

However, a pistol is to a homicidal assailant as a syringe filled with an anti-biotic is to an infection. There can be no differentiation in that both the assailant and the infection will take your life, just by different means.

A gun is a mechanical contrivance, not altogether different from a vacuum cleaner or an automobile. All should be respected, but none truly feared. Take a course, learn the ropes. It's like overcoming the fear of flying, because only in doing so are you going to be able to make an 'informed' decision as opposed to an emotional decision.

And if, in the end, you decide that you cannot use a firearm in your own self-defense, then sobeit. At least you'll have not made the decision in ignorance or fear of the alternative.

lol

Had to quote.

Gun is the same as a vacuum. lmao!

Shane:
A gun is a tool, Marian; no better or no worse than any other tool: an axe, a shovel or anything. A gun is as good or as bad as the man using it. Remember that.

Using Ishmael's logic, every citizen should be deputized.

Either that or police forces should only hire officers who are faster than a locomotive, able to leap tall buildings in a single bound and generally be in more than one place at a time.

I don't respect my vacuum cleaner - I despise it. However, I'm sure I would respect the capabilities of a gun.

You're half right, deputation is not required.

If someone doesn't add your "A gun is a mechanical contrivance, not altogether different from a vacuum cleaner" line to their sig, I just might be compelled to do so.

Because truly epic stupidity should be celebrated.

If I were to render you incapable, or unwilling, to resist and then hooked my overpowered Electrolux up to an anesthesia mask to collapse your lungs you might find a new respect for the capabilities of a vacuum cleaner.

The point was not that vacuum cleaner = pistol, merely that both are mechanical contrivances. I have no delusions that some assailant running into a movie theater waving a vacuum hose around in a threatening manner would be taken seriously, except by Homeland Security who would arrest him/her on some 'weapons of mass destruction' charge.

I hope they do, such epic ignorance shouldn't be forgotten.

That is weirdly spooky and hysterically funny, all at the same time.

Also, both are portable.

Further, both can be painted whatever colour one wishes.

Finally, both can be used as paper-weights.

I covered the "return" of gun control to public discussion the other day. Once the liberals get a "cause" up their ass they will never abandon it. They might put it aside for a few years for reasons of political expediency but they will always bring it back eventually. Same thing with capital punishment. When support was running 70% or more in favor of it, they put their opposition to it on the back burner. Now that polls show "only" 60% in favor of it, they are fighting it again. They never truly drop any issue once they bring it in the orthodox cannon of their causes.

Those gun owners who voted for Obama because they thought this issue was "off the table" are in for a rude awakening during the second term.

I might add it to my phone sigline : sent from my gun, not altogether different than a vacuum cleaner

Typically, it's the ignorant fucking rednecks who own guns that end up shooting themselves or the other ignorant fucking rednecks who support gun rights -- and I am totally good with that.

Did a redneck steal your lunch money from you in kindergarden?

Earlier I held a training class for the kids. I explained that they need to respect the cyclone power and ball thingie that makes the vacuum swivel. If they aren't paying attention they could ruin the rug in the family room, also they might kill one another.

Tomorrow we will discuss the stand mixer.

I taught the little dude that putting tin foil in his mouth is the same as sticking a metal coat hanger in a socket while dripping wet.
