Raking Berries (not a euphemism)

When my family went picking blueberries it was a relatively small field in southern Maine that I think was owned by friends of the family I don't know that it was an actual working blueberry field because there were just clumps here and there hither and yon and we just picked them by hand.

Most of the really big barrens are further downeast. If there were clumps here and there, as you said, it probably wasn't a commercial barren. They burn them off every year. Well, actually, they burn half each year in rotation, because it takes two years for the plants to produce berries. So, to have a real working blueberry business, you need big fields, filled with them.

I've often wondered who was the guy that was holding the map upside down when he christened the region "downeast."

It's Down East because it's down wind. Or so they say. I lived most of my life within 15 miles of the ocean and I've never been in a boat bigger than a canoe.

Even I've been on a lobstermen's boat! I thought it was required.

Fun fact: there are far more boats in the desert of Arizona than in Maine. I don't know if it's still true but at one point there were more boats per capita in Arizona than any other state.

My dad always loved horse trading in for various reasons we ended up with a couple of boats and a couple of motorhomes that way over the years. Not at the same time, mind you; at some point it would be traded for something else.

Water skiing almost made being drug from Maine worthwhile.
