Do you get obsessed with things, either temporarily or for long periods of time (like your whole life)? I get hyperfocused on things all the time as someone with ADHD, that last for varying amounts of time. Right now, one of them is the app You Need a Budget (YNAB) - it's so satisfying seeing all the categories turn green when I get paid! And I've never been able to budget before, but this is helping me stick to it.

I want to know what you're obsessed with! What weird things cause you to go down a rabbit hole?

That's a great story about you and budgeting! Thanks for sharing it.

And a nice concept for a thread too!

My obsession is somewhat along the lines of yours, I think. I created my own excel spreadsheet for planning my taxes throughout the year. I can do estimates on taxes whenever anything financial changes, or I'm planning something. It is sophisticated enough to be able to predict the results when I finally do my taxes each year - though I never use it to actually do them.

I find that the moment I understand some changes to the tax law has occurred, I make a beeline to my spreadsheet and revise it to be as accurate as I can.

Love that! I easily get obsessed with spreadsheets, too. I had one that I made to track a house hunt, that tracked trends in the area of houses that were for sale or sold. It was way more than needed for looking at houses but it was fun!

I am soo "different" that spending a few HOURS revising my spreadsheet is not a concern. I actually get a bit disappointed when my revision work is completed, so i recheck to see if I missed any OTHER tax changes.

Then I get on lit - full of energy...:D

Nuclear energy.

Weird, right? But I find the subject absolutely fascinating. Everything from Fermi's Pile 1 under Stagg Field to weapons, to the accidents at various locations, to the proposed mini-reactors of today. Along with the mistakes and mindsets about nukes, radiation, Civil Defense and safety. All of it interests me.

I retired from a nuke plant a few years ago. I used to train the licensed operators on the simulator and both taught and evaluated their performance combatting nuke accidents. It IS fascinating. I've been asked (since my retirement) to teach on a few accidents at civic group meetings like Rotary...so I taught the details (abbreviated, of course) about Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and Fukushima. People were very interested in learning the details.

Being ADHD myself, obsessions come and go, as you said. A decades long obsession of mine is re-reading and analyzing, without aide, the Iliad. Another one is LitE itself, it's been 2 1/2 years and I'm actually worried that I don't have writers block, but that my brain is just done with it.

I head down rabbit holes all the time - often tied to hobbies or activities I may enjoy. So I might be onto wanting to learn how to make something and then it's like, well what else can I make with the same items? And the ideas keep popping into my head. This is one that happens regularly though the what is being made can vary widely.

Also history or random facts can lead me deep into rabbit holes for brief periods of time. Like a reference in a movie or tv show that has me wondering about a certain period in history and I'll read about it for a bit and then move on.

Hello there. Long time reader, first time poster ... Is that the right words? Damn it, totally killed the joke.

Left to right. Right to left. I don't care what it is, things need to be evenly spaced out. White T-shirts folded in a drawer? Boxer briefs and socks will match the space taken.

Knick knacks on a shelf? They will be dress right dress with equal spacing all around.

Equal amount of shoe lace on both side on both shoes.

Damn, writing it down makes me look like a psycho. It's a good look this time of year.

If you like podcasts, you should check out No Such Thing as a Fish - 4 hosts who each present a random fact and then they all go down a rabbit hole relating to the facts.
