Question for the American Historians

In another post I mentioned a compass I found. I'll mention it here again.

It is a small, two inch diameter, brass cased compass with cover. On the cover is embossed or stamped the letters:

U.S.C.E.

Any idea what that would stand for? U.S. Corp. of Engineers?

I looked it up and that is the only use for that acronym I can find. It's odd, though, because the usual acronym for the Corps is USCOE. How old does it look to be?
 
As usual, Weird Harold appears to be correct ... and I'm guessing the compass pictured near the bottom of this subpage of the web page he listed will match the one you have.

And if you're interested, a quick scan of eBay has similar antique compasses going for about 35-40 bucks (depending on condition).
