I've seen a lot of threads on waxing but haven't seen this question yet.

I really would like to go get professionally waxed, legs, bikini, and the Brazillian bikini wax. I know a few of you out there have done this.

And I guess it's not so much of a question but a worry. I'm a little overweight and am just nervous about having someone see me naked (other than my husband :) ).

Are they really professional? I'm sure they wouldn't say anything to me, but I'm worried about them making faces, etc.

I'm not ready to try waxing myself, I would like to get it professionally done the first time so I can kind of see how it's done.

Any 'chunky' ladies been professionally waxed? What's your experience with it?

Yup, been waxed. Yup, TOTALLY chunky.

When I had mine done, I didn't get a brazillian, but I did get bikini waxing done. The way that they handled it, was that they said I could wear my bathing suit, and they just pushed the fabric out of the way to get those certain things done. They made no comment, made no faces, but they SHOULD warn you of how being overweight may affect the pain or the process.

Being overweight, your skin is .. looser.. than a more slim person's is. At least, mine is. So when they put wax onto an overweight person, there's more possible PULL in your skin. They will have to hold down your skin, while they rip the wax off. PLEASE do not feel that that is a comment, or a slight to your weight. It's just how it needs to be done to get optimal results.

Just do what you're comfy with. And trust me. No matter how large or unattractive you feel, they're like doctors. They've seen EVERYTHING, and as part of their profession, they are to JUST do what they're there to do. Otherwise, they could get sued and fired.

Thanks Ms L. :)

I'm still really nervous about it, but my husband and I are going on a extended weekend getaway and I think I'm gonna have it done a couple days before we leave.

I asked my sister if she would go with me. She's not getting it done, but said she would go for moral support. :)

yes, i go every month....and i'm no skinny minny! my experience has been great, the girl i go to is very professional.....

i do get the full brazillian and yes, like ms_l mentioned, there is a "holding" down of the skin to keep it taut while the strip is being pulled off. it is something that they have to do to get the job done properly. if you are worried about the pain, i sometimes take a couple of advil an hour before i go. it does help a little bit with the pain.....but i've found the more i've gone, the less it's starting to hurt. i also get hives with the waxing, i've been told it's normal for some people to get it, and my girl told me to take some antihistamine for it before i go to my appointment, and that's helped as well.

i know it's a little embarassing, the thought of being so exposed but they have seen it all. they are professionals and this is what they do. my first time was quite nerve wracking as well. i was so worried about the pain.....and the idea of being so exposed. the pain is momentary and it's really not that bad, and well, being so exposed, it's like going to the doctors.

good luck and you'll enjoy how it feels afterwards as will your husband. oh, another pointer, don't get waxed the week before your period, as the pain is heightened during that time! and don't forget to exfoliate like crazy afterwards to help prevent ingrown hairs.....and moisturize like crazy too!

have a great vacation!:D

The skin has to be pulled tight wherever you're waxed. I'm lucky enough to have a mother who's a hairstylist and can wax me. (I say lucky just because as a college student, it saves the time of finding a place and it saves a few bucks here and there.) Whenever she does my lip or eyebrows, the skin is always made tight, so like Ms_Lil said, don't take it as offense. I assume that everyone has to go through that routine.

Also, if they were to make faces, they aren't really that professional, are they? :) That's basically a reason I would use to not do something, like get a deep Swedish massage, even though a towel covers most of you. However...it's a pretty crappy reason. Be bold! Good luck! :rose:

No offense taken from either. I completely understand what you're saying. :)

And, I made an appointment! It's not for another 4 weeks almost, but I'm excited! (And nervous!)

Thanks for the advice ladies. :rose:

By the way. I've said this a few times about waxing, but I feel I should warn you of the really nasty potential side effects.

Waxing and I don't get along. The first time I had it done (I have done it twice), I had it done professionally. I was going to Europe for a month, and didn't want to bother with shaving, etc, so I thought this would be good.

I had my legs (full) and bikini area done. The woman did everything right. Everything. She did a test on my arm to see if the wax was too hot, she tried it on my arm (near the wrist) to see if my body was okay with the wax, everything. So we went for the legs.

Now, I'm naturally blonde. And I have fair skin. So we started waxing, and the pain, for me, was ridiculous. I can take pain, and this was tough for me. And the results sucked. The wax not only broke my hair in the middle of the hairs (even though it was long enough, and what she considered thick enough), so I ended up with stubble all over my legs, etc, but the wax literally pulled off layers of my skin. I was blotchy and bloody from bikini area to my toes. It sucked. And it looked terrible. So in 40 degree celcius heat in Italy, I was wearing long skirts and pants.

About 3 months ago, I tried again. I figured that 4 more years of shaving would have made my hair thick enough on my legs, and that my skin must have toughened up. Nope. Again, layers of skin came off, and blood was everywhere. My doc says it's just that I have fair, sensitive skin, and that I should really NOT opt for that hair-removal option anymore.

Depilatory creams also burn my skin, no matter how "gentle" they're supposed to be.

Just... be aware of what can happen.

Yikes!

I'm pretty sure that I won't have any problems though. I did try waxing myself at one a few years ago. While I had no problem with the wax on my legs or with it pulling out the hair, it was just too time consuming and too messy for me to do myself.

And I've used Nair before with no problems. Just not something I wanna do myself.

i am a licensed, board certified (Cosmetology, Division of Licensure & Registration of MA 1995-2004, RI 1998-2003, FL 1998-2003) cosmetologist with 9 years of work experience with hair removal with wax.

Some things one would need to know (as i inform all of my clients of such) :

1) Skin should always be pulled tight and held in place prior to pulling the cloth/paper strips to remove the hair on any part of the body. This method is to be used regardless of weight or skin type.

2) Any professional cosmetologist should find no issue, nor react as anything other than professional in regard to their client's weight (or any other attribute, for that matter). If they do not act in a professional manner you should seek services elsewhere (Obtaining solid referrals and asking how long the stylist has been licensed i always a good idea).

3) Hold off on the waxing if you have been tanning that day, are pre-menstrual or menstruating that day or if you use alpha hydroxy products or skin peels or if the area to be waxed is irritated, injured, scarred or experiencing a break out of acne or the likes.

I've tried to wax my legs myself and found the pain so unbearable I was unable to finish. Surprisingly my pain threshold is pretty high, but wow that was awful. Maybe I did it wrong? I also got many nice beautiful hives after & was in pain for quite awhile (which is why I wonder if I did it wrong, but this was a long time ago so I dont remember how I did it). Have you ever heard of someone getting it professionally done and having to stop partway into it due to pain? I'd be much more interested in a brazillian now a days then my legs though, I wonder if that is more of less painful?

Great advice this fits in with my other thread (a 'natural girl's" questions!)

Thanks sinn0cent1! It really helps alot to know exactly what they do.

And I'm really looking forward to getting it done. I don't think the pain will be too much that I can't handle it though. I've been through more kidney stones than I can count in the past 2 years, I think that if I can survive those with no medication, that waxing will be a breeze. ;)
