My Domme has given me orders to research and purchase the next blade she will be using on me for erotic cutting/scratching (we would use razor blades for permanent cuttings, so right now I'm just going for erotic purposes). I have found a style, size, etc that I love and know will please her, however, I'm running into some confusion on price difference.

If I search online on common knife sites, the price range is about minimum $50 for the style I am looking at, all the way up to $500+ In searching on ebay, I will find knives with the same exact specs (same blade material, coating, whatever)...sometimes for as low as $4.99. This is baffling me...why such a difference in price for what appears to be much the same product?

Call me naive, I'm from North Dakota, LOL...but any insight on this or what to look for (or not to look for) in a blade would be much appreciated. I do not mind spending money on a quality item, but I also do not want to waste money where need not.

I'm not sure about why the price difference for seemingly similar products unless it is related to the quality of the metal in the blade. I would think that could have some significance on safety and quality, but as to how much is too much I am not sure.

Being an old knife enthusiast....Hehe.

Like anything else, there is a huge variation in price depending on quality of materials, manufacturing techniques, etc. At the high end of the scale are custom-made blades procuced by very skilled craftsmen using the best possible steels. You might well expect to pay hundreds for even a very straightforward blade of this type, and much more for anything custom.

At mid-point, you have the various high-quality but mass-produced blades. You can find excellent knives to fill any purpose in this range for under 100.00

At the low end, you're looking at cheezy foriegn-made (read..China) imports that are knock-offs of better stuff. Churned out by big factories using substandard material and lousy quality control. A good example would be most of the stuff in the "Bud K." catalogue. http://www.budkww.com/index.asp

Now, for your purposes, I'd say that appearance and style are going to trump the ability to shave hair off your arm or skin a hippopotamus, or protect your life from the bad guys. So, if the thing's looks turn you on, buy it!

BTW, Bud K's knives may be cheesy, but they are knock-offs of much nicer blades.

Thank you Bikewer :)

The blade I am looking at is in the $60 range...and apon closer research, the blade itself appears to be carbon stainless steel with stainless steel handles, whereas the "knockoffs" are stainless steel with aluminum handles. I am leaning towards the first...cheap just makes me uneasy, and the sites that sell these higher quality blades guarentee their sharpness and free of defects....who knows what you would be getting with the other stuff.

Yes, I did see that even staight forward, no frills pocket blades could run in the hundreds...I was a bit taken aback by that! Makes you feel a hell of a lot sorrier for those poor fools that forget to leave their pocketknives at home before walking into airports!

Knives being a subject close to both my, and Pearl's hearts...

I never really reccomend buying a knife unless the person who is actually going to use it can hold it in their hands.
It really does make a difference..
I can say to avoid the cheesy stuff like the plauge...It can be dangerous to play with. For a variety of reasons.
My personal favorites..Currently..
A Cold Steel Vaquero Grande...Cold steel makes good production blades- Very good ones .. This is the knife that I live with..I wake up and it goes on with my pants - it doesn't come off till I go to bed at night.
You actually can shave with it...And it holds it's edge in a nice predictable fashion.
Predictability is a wonderful thing when you are playing...Especially when the possibility of blood is present...

And an inexpensive - but very nice Gerber - from Wally world of all places..

Oh, and most of the price difference tends to be in things like the quality/temper etc.. of the steel...And attention to minutae like the grind lines..

Buy the best knife you can afford ...always.

{Oh, all of Cold Steel's knives can be ordered from their website. Which can be a handy thing}

depends what they're meant to be used for, how much they cost. Combat knives are the most expencive because they need to be very solid and sharp in order to cut through bone etc. for your purposes, it's probably not going to be undergoing a lot of pressure, I can't say I'd reccomend buying one of top quality. *shrugs* but I probably don't know as much as the others, whatever.
