This one:
  • Teasers, partial works, excerpts of offsite works, or any work that appears to be a promotion for other platforms
Just looking for clarification as I believe what I intended to do will violate the above rule. I've recently started posting serialized updates to my story "Paige Turner - Origins" on SubscribeStar. I was hoping to increase visibility by posting the same updates over here and hopefully gain a few subscribers over there until I read the above rule. So anything I post here cannot just be intended to whet folks appetites in order to gain subscribers over there. That would be a teaser and most definitely a partial work. Never mind it could also be considered an excerpt of offsite work.

That said, I've got several spinoff stories, origins within origins, I'm going to work on that should be shorter. Am I allowed to post completed works here that are intended to garner support for larger projects over there?

Thank you!

Correct. You can lag behind what is on your subscribestar, but you must post regular updates, and whatever series you start here need to finish here. Making readers go offsite to finish reading the story is a big no-no.
Thank you! After I posted I realized I might could probably do it as a series and release updates here a (week or two)? after I drop them SubscribeStar. That will work for my purposes.

Thanks again!

Yeah, I’ve had to delay my possible sequel to my Will Trent story recently while I decide how to handle the meta plot villain. Lit doesn’t allow some things she’s into and featuring the larger scope villain makes things even worse. Wade couldn’t help me with this, so I had to call in Wanda. Ugh. This makes my head hurt even more. [Deadpool & Lady Deadpool dance around Achtungnight and grin]

Provided you make it clear to readers that the whole work is here on Lit, and there's no cross promotion to SubscribeStar from the story itself.

You can only reference off-site from your profile, Signature block, or the thread for Publications from Lit authors, but only if you have content here on Lit. And you can't link off-site from story content.

I feel your pain! I'm constantly having to rethink things because I want to reach a wider audience than just the niche pervs out there like me who might be grossed out by some things but wouldn't put a read down just because it was included. :D

Definitely no cross promotion within the story... that crap would break emersion.

About making it clear that the whole work is available on Lit... does making it clear that whole work will be available on Lit once it's finished count? It's a work in progress. I was thinking I could start putting up the parts I have so far and then add to the series until it's complete while having the updates on Lit lag behind SubscribeStar by a week or so.

And thanks very much for you feedback. While I am hoping to make a little money I very much want to share my work and I think if I can do what I'm talking about above I'll gain supporters/subscribers. I very much do NOT want to break any rules. I might have only just joined Lit but I've been lurking for ages and I really dig it here.

Thanks again,
Lord Strange

Borderline, I'd say. I'd PM Laurel, ask her the question.

And be careful. Full disclosure- the intended villain character of my Will Trent sequel is another character played by the same actress as the heroine of Will Trent in an alternate universe who is a serial killer. I may have to change that before publication and the evil alternate version of me as a fanfic writer who’s sponsoring this crossover is definitely someone I can’t bring onto Lit. Deadpool and Lady Deadpool will take care of him either way. I hope. [Ach relaxes as Lady Deadpool shows him his alternate version’s severed head] Phew! Maybe I can publish the original version of this story elsewhere. Maybe not. We’ll see.

One thing that can be an issue for this kind of cross-publishing is if some of the material doesn't fit on Literotica (e.g. violates content rules, or large sections with no erotic focus). IIRC somebody mentioned a while back that they'd been caught in a catch-22 where they'd written several stories in a setting, all posted on some other site; they couldn't post all of them here for some kind of content reason, but when they tried to post only the ones that fit in here, that was rejected as being a teaser.

In that kind of case I guess it comes down to whether one can convince Laurel that the stories posted here are complete in themselves, and aren't a promotion for the off-site version.

What I’m settling on is stand alone stories in the same universe as a larger scope story to handle the big picture. The stand alone stories can be on Lit, the big one not necessarily. We’ll see.

This makes perfect sense. The way I write and the content I'm going with, this shouldn't be an issue.

That's good, but question; is the main site the story on some sort of monetized site? If you're making money on it, why post here for free?

Yes subscribestar is a monetized sight but I've yet to gain any subscribers and I don't think I will until people get a true feeling for my work.

This why I'm hoping to be able to post updates here a week or so after I drop them on subscribestar. If folks like my work maybe they'll support me by subbing over there so they don't have to wait so long for updates here.

That make sense? I've got get some exposure before people will be interested, I think. Besides this is just my first story in the Strange Universe. There will be other stand alone stories and some of those I'll post here others maybe only behind a paywall.

Thanks for your question!

Your plan is similar to mine. The caveat is how many people get around and like Acthung said, who's willing to pay. Anybody reading your stuff here isn't going to pay for it, reading it here for free. It can work, though. Wasn't it you, @KeithD that said you publish stuff here that was originally paid work after so long?

I've never heard of the site, honestly. I might check it out. What I'm doing is putting things free to read in various places to get my name out here, and give people a general idea of what and how I write. Most of the things are purposefully short. What I wanna sell is not what I'm just giving away. Sorry if I'm not making any sense. Truthfully those here who actually make money off this shit might have better advice.

I personally am not interested in writing adult fiction for money at this time. I write fanfics, so there would be legal issues. If I switch to another genre… we’ll see.

Yes, nearly everything I post here has had a run in the marketplace before--usually years before.

This sort of retail business I appreciate. I’m a fan of authors who practice it such as KMB and Bluedragon. Authors who go the opposite route, story starts out free and then you have to pay for the conclusion? Not into that for obvious reasons.

I'm not talking about charging people to read the conclusion at all, please don't make that confusion. I just want to post on my subscribestar account only a week or two in advance of dropping the updateds here as I finish them.

The reason for this is that I'm hoping people like my stories enough to subscribe so they can get updates earlier or just to throw me a few a bones because they dig my work.

Everything I post here will fully available start to finish.

That said if they won't allow me to post in that manner I'll keep doing what I'm doing and release the entire work here once it's finished.

Either way I want people to read this stuff... I'm proud of my work and I think it's a great story... the first of many great stories.

Thank you,
Lord Strange

I personally am more into free stories than ones behind paywalls. But do as you will, harm none. Hopefully.
I like free stuff too! Who doesn't? That's why I'm leaning in here at Lit. I understand completely that no one is going to buy a thing they haven't had a taste of.... moreover I completely get how giving someone a taste only to deny them the meal is cruel and just plain rude.

So yes my work will be shared here free of charge. I will always direct people to my subscribestar account for the latest project I'm working on and I'll express my gratitude should anyone like my work enough to subscribe there so I can keep writing and sharing it.

So again whether or not I'm allowed to post serialized updates here a week or so behind my subscribestar updates or if have to wait until this first story is finished before posting it here I will releasing my content here.

You'll be fine using that strategy. There is an author RawlyRawls who has stories on their pay site months in advance and posts here once a month with new chapters of their various series (usually has a couple going at a time).

They state with every post how many chapters are available on their site if you want to read ahead, but are very consistent about posting here on their regular schedule.

So a talented author that I'm friends with had this exact problem, and they no longer post on Lit as a result.

From my understanding, you can't have the majority of a story (over 50%) on another site, and still put a portion on Lit.

How do they calculate "majority?" As far as I can tell, it's only by the number of entries.

My friend had 4 posted on Lit and 9 posted offsite. As 9 is more than twice what was on Lit, the chapters got removed from Lit.

So, I would, at the very least, make sure that you never have more than 8 offsite when you have 4 on site, etc.

In the particular case I'm referring to, the 9th entry was a tiny little side piece, almost like a trailer, but it didn't matter. Laurel doesn't have time to deal with nuances. She's busy, and so she does things in broad strokes.
