Lately, I have seen so many self congratulatory threads from folks who
pat themselves on the back for their ability to type rather than think. One
poster had over 400 messages in less than 3 weeks. In a few days he/she will likely be a "Guru", whatever that means.

I always understood that the title "Guru" was awarded for the quality of one's thoughts, ie. their wisdom, rather than a "milemarker" indicating how many times you had a thought, no matter how trivial.

What if we did away with titles, altogether? How do you feel about that? Do you think it would improve this site?

You know me. I'm just curious!

I keep saying this. I don't want to be a guru. A guru is a teacher, a light on the path, as it were.

I'd rather no one followed me anywhere. I'm always lost.

No argument here. I have got the damn title (and the pants, hee hee) but I don't feel deserving of it.

Not to blow my own horn but...

As undeserving as I am there are some out there who are far less deserving. A fact which only makes your argument stronger.

Maybe a selection committee or list of criteria would be the answer.

Flamingo..

I understand your point completely (although I certainly hope I am not one of those people that types out a lot of pointless stuff....)

As far as being a guru goes, here it is just a creative title and is not meant to be taken the way the actual dictionary definition would have it.

I know that you weren't here before, but never have people increased their number of posts so quickly before...
Now, for better or worse, there is something to "shoot for." (haha hahah hahaaa)

I have specifically refrianed from having parties when I reached different levels of status, however, I don't mind all that much when people do it.
This is not a mensa board or anything (no offense to member with said name... ) it is an erotic message board and so no matter what we do, there will always be people like dee cole and dave 73, etc.

Anyway, I hope you aren't mad at me but I have to vote "no" on the taking away of the status thing... perhaps it is b/c I am close to 1,000 (lol) but seriously, if you don't want to read the posts of the people that post pointlessly and without purpose (yes, I said it that way on 'purpose' haha) then just do what I do (no offense anyone), ignore them!

Bulletin BORED?

Blue,

Maybe remembering to put the environment into your perspective would be equally helpful?! Oh, but then you'd have to remember that people who don't take themselves so seriously live longer, healthier, happier lives. ;)

i.e. Who gives a fuck? This is a sex site bulletin board, not the committee to rewrite an all new draft of the Constitution.

Condescending that some of the "newbies" don't think before they type is just sad really. I mean, how much forethought did you use before kiddingly publically asking Bella for the "directions" to her humble abode to administer "spankies"? Hopefully, none. Orchestrated spontaneity. Just yeuuuck!

Sweet Payne....

Who is taking who too seriously??? I simply asked a question.

By the way, I don't spank anyone. I never did and, I never will.

Bluesy,

If you're worried that I take you seriously, let me put your mind at ease.

Counselor, you naysaying aside, you clearly requested directions to the ladies home, only after she yanked her silky drawahs down and demanded spankies. You, sir, are branded red handed!

Remember, you're a refined YardBird, not an ostrich.

All in fun, right?

isn't that what these "titles" are all about? if people like them, keep them. don't let the ignorance of a "few" people keep you or anyone else from their fun.
gosh! if we all did that, would there be any fun left?

Even if I beg for it?

All very interesting - But...

Of course a couple of thoughts -

It seems (hey, from this proud newbie's perspective) that perhaps an "accident of competition" has arisen and that it may most likely crash. (Soon?) Unintentional I'm fairly certain. Hey people who craft websites/chat-rooms ET al (Who are you by the way?) can't foresee all that will eventually manifest or should I say fester. My guess is that these titles and the rules regarding gurus were originally well intentioned and rather miniscule ideas (but hey I too could be wrong, as often) that have grown over time into the monsters they seem to have become. Kind of like the old "pass the message" around the circle sort of thing - the message (or in this case the idea of titles) eventually gets distorted. My strong hunch is that our lovely monitor and her cohorts also have many thoughts on this but they either haven't felt the time was right to present their ideas to the posters or they think that their thoughts might upset too many people.

Well as you know I don't really care about upsetting people - I do care about getting them to think.

Personal Example:

I work in a corporate environment. I've spent most of my career in a "growing" corporate environment. Some folks - early on when we were small, made VP - back then the rules were different, we needed VP's and some got promoted. Over time, the business getting larger, needs changing as do the rules. Most of those early VP's eventually proved inadequate. They could not grow for whatever reason, with the company. Do you pull their title and demote them? No, basic inadequacy via change is not really demotable and can be a sticky legal issue. Usually, they're simply back-burnered or they simplify their responsibilities - let them keep their title and pay check - where they languish until retirement. That's how time, change and titles play out in the corporate world. Always changing. Now day's - at any one time I've got some real looser VP's (the early promoted one's) who don't know it, some who do know it but are always paranoid and some real hotshot VP's breathing down my neck. It's a real zoo.

Also -

Another thing I should note is "words." Something about words - words printed on a page or displayed on a screen. They most often "read" cold. That is, for the most part, they don't actually convey "positive" human emotion - printed words tend to lean toward the negative. ESPECIALLY WORDS IMPLYING OR DEMONSTRATING HUMOR! It's highly understandable too. You can't see the smile, you can't see the gleeful twinkle in the eye of a poster. And let me further this a bit, into some dangerous territory - some of us folks (I use the word "us" loosely) - some of us, huddled around our computers so much, nearly all day - well I wonder about the quality of their lives (now some of you, maybe all of you have fine, healthy lives - but there must be quite a few who don't). There may be some (a bit) bitter folks out there posting.

So when you consider that printed words tend to favor the negative and combine that with some "life grumpy" folks - you get some hurt feelings. A lot of upside down smilies.

It's really not so hard to understand. It's human.

I understand now. You insulted the people who posted on your thread to make them think. Hmmmmm. Novel approach there Sparky. I guess people think better when they're pissed off!

Once upon a time....

You supply the rest of the story.

**** I just noticed that I posted this in error to this thread. Oh, well.

:D

Don't you worry your pretty little head about it Blue Dahhhling....

I did and I will continue to do so until enough people send me hate mail or Laurel rips it off the site and bans my ip :)

Did anyone pick up any tomatoes at the store? I need some tomatoes.

And this matters how?

I mean come off it, how does your title on this board really matter? And who exactly gives a flying fuck who is a guru and whether they deserve the title. Perhaps I have learned quite early that some so called distinctions are as worthless as an empty pop can ($.10 in MI). You see I have a BS in psychology. Now this hard earned (yeah right) degree has qualified me to run any salad bar anywhere in town or to take the dreaded GRE and more schooling (doubt it)and get some real degree. Thus I well know the only things that are important are those you make important.
Anytime you guys want to discuss how fucked up Freud and Skinner were, let me know.

Psycho's all... me too.

BF Skinner I once had to dinner
Eating my Freud's away
Along came a Jung
And away I did run
Fucking my mother all the way

God I love a smart ass!
Am I the only one who wants to see Lasher and Sparky in a fight to the death mud wrestling tournament? I'm calling dips on holding the hose!

Hold it there -

I'm a former Marine - Semper Fi to all who deserve it. Lasher (except for the pretense of his name) probably has no training. A former jar-head - explains a lot huh? Go figure.

Damn! The Corps must be proud of you Spunky.

"Hose" has a predefined meaning not met here!

I thought midget mud wrestling was illegal? If not, I put $5.00 on the one that can't spell!

Blue, I happen to agree with you, while seeing other people's points at the same time. I do think that the titles encourage people to post more often. I find the idea of choosing my own title at post 1000 to be immensely appealing. However, taking away the titles probably wouldn't make that much of a difference. I wonder if there was some sort of mathematical formula that could be devised that included the amount of time a person has been registered here and their number of posts. Then the titles could be doled out accordingly. <shrugs> Just an idea which will likely go nowhere.

ALso, I wonder if there is a way to limit the number of threads one person could start in one day. Not that Laurel would probably ever do that. (It's not her style.) However, a girl can wish, can't she? I suppose we'll have to rely on the old standby of people doing their own policing, eh?

Ever notice that there are two types of GURUHOOD threads? The kind where the person is unabashedly proud of it, and the popular, "Well, I wasn't going to start one, but now I am because [fill in a reason here]" kind. I don't particulary care for commonplace self-congratulatory threads. "Look at me, notice me, say nice things about me!!" Yet, some of them have been worthwhile, DCL's notably. That's probably because he plainly wasn't seeking out people to pat him on the back for the number of his posts. Once again he was making an astute observation, something he is quite good at.

Problem is WH, people cant police themselves

:p

Where's my shrink?

Pssst...Siren. Weird Harold is a guy. <winks> I'm WS, a girl and proud of it! While I like and respect the man immensely, I don't really want to BE him. <giggles>
