THEREAPERSWIFE

The issue isnt new laws. The necessary laws already exist.

The issue is a professional's stature with the court to influence decisions about you and your family.

Here's how it usually works in practice:

Lotsa people practice mental health therapy, so when you hang out your shingle you need a hook that makes you different from the others. And you decide to specialize with Internet Addiction Syndrome. So you visit everyone in town, drumming up business. You go to all the schools and child welfare services and daycares. You convince everyone its the fucking plague. And everyone starts looking for signs of the problem.

Then teachers and school psychologists and guidance counselors see it with your kid. The kid doesnt tell them you were working on-line or doing research, etc. The kid says "Mom is on the fucking puter all the time." And then you get a visit from child welfare for neglect, because the school is alarmed.

If the social-worker is 22 and fresh out of college, she may have a problem with you working from home. She may insist you put your other kid in daycare, so he's socialized, etc. She wants you to go see Donna Dogooder the internet addiction specialits. And if you refuse she may decide to tie you up in court.

The judge will eventually toss the case out, but it takes a while.

...do you have any photo's of the GF's daughter?

 -KC

The pictures are in my mind. Funny thing is, in my mind, she's not wearing any clothes. The other day, I saw her walking down the hall wearing nothing but a towel - a short towel, flapping open on the side. I had to go home and destroy an unknown number of brain cells to get over it.

(Back OT) It is an interesting concept, pondering whether or not a person can be considered an addict because of compulsive behavior. With advances in science, new theories develop, but it can take time for these new theories to be accepted, sort of like it took time for people to realize the world wasn't flat after all.

Hey, do you remember the ADD/ADHD "crisis" they had a few years back? Suddenly, people knew what these terms meant, and every kid had it? I was diagnosed with ADD several years earlier than that, but because Ritalin made me a zombie, my mother decided medication wasn't good for me. But, I still had it. I was constantly getting into trouble at school, my lack of focus causing many teachers to label me as a problem. It was only when I entered highschool that they had made greater strides in pharmaceuticals for it and I was able to find a medicine that worked for me. The way the teachers treated me BEFORE they knew how to help me was very threatening, and has scarred me for years.

Sure, occasionally, the "Puritans" get something moving in such a way that it ruins people's lives, but overall they're flops and nobody buys what they're selling. Despite America being obese, I still eat creme puffs for breakfast. Even though violent video games are supposed to be bad, I still bought NO MORE HEROES for the Wii(and loved it!). Gay people are still allowed to run around, free and untreated. Satanism has made progress in becoming an official religion. Oh yeah, I feel the encroaching threat. ;)

DEEZIRE

I recall the days when queers were 'it." Everyone wanted to cure them. The disorder remained in the book till 1980.

Every few years we have an eruption of something new that everyone tries to cash-in on. A century ago it was snake-oil, PERUNA TONIC, and LYDIA PINKHAM'S VEGETABLE ELIXIR.

TAKE IT TO THE BANK...You cannot be diagnosed with a disorder your insurance refuses to pay for, and you'll have a spontaneous cure the minute you exhaust your insurance benefit.

JBJ aka "Bunny-Man"(I liked your old avatar better)

Maybe you should just accept that this might actually be a REAL problem. After all, I'll admit, Literotica has made me borderline. :D

Would it offend you, to suggest Haldol for what you're going through. I hear it helps alleviate that irrational feeling of the world closing in on you. :)

Oh, and I hope you have the balls to respond to me this time. ;)

My apology to you, I pollinate lotsa flowers and LIT is one of them, so I miss things.

In truth I'm maybe the sanest person youve ever met.

I'll respond to your previous post later today. I have to leave like right now.

C'mon! Don't be civil! :( It's 'cause of my pretty face, isn't it? Ugh! You're so disagreeable....I can't even disagree with you!!

Poor "addicted." It used to be a word that meant something. It's been so abused that it now means nothing at all.

They already have Internet detox programs for people who are seriously addicted. They take like 2-4 weeks of behavior modification. They say heavy gamers are the worst.

Like Conservative used to?

:D

Here is MY take on addicts in general..... Travel with me and Mr. Peabody in the Way Back Machine....... it was called "addictive personalities". And it was ALWAYS about that......

It is only the acting out of the personalities that has changed.....

But it STILL means something..... Compulsive behavior.....

I've observed every therapy fad since 1967. Gay was a serious disorder back then, and your mom did it to you. People had neuroses then; neuroses dont exist anymore, they went extinct I think. And no one was hyperactive or had attention problems.

When ADHD came along the culprit was allergies to food dyes, then sugar and white flour. No one believes THAT anymore, either. I have my own theory about ADD. I think people with ADD have an abundance of neurons that enable them to process too much, too fast. And they have a different sense of time. I suspect many ADD people self medicate with alcohol because alcohol is a depressant that helps them cope with the stimulation...until old age kills enough of the pesky neurons and makes them 'normal'.

THE INTERNET.
I suppose the internet isnt a problem if you use it 18 hours a day for work.

Joy and money are the bottomline for Puritans. Traditionally Puritans frown on anything that isnt toil. If you actually like what youre doing, then youre sick & twisted. Unless you work 18 hours a day at your addictions clinic, and many people do.

Puritans like to change the criteria for illness, so they can capture it for billing purposes.

Maybe INTERNET ADDICTION is an excuse for the government to regulate what you do, like its trying to do with everything else you enjoy.
