Why do I do this to myself?

This morning as I was walking thru my jobsite I came across a stray dog. He was a cute, playful and seemed to be thrilled to see me. One little scrach behind the ears and he was following me around for the rest of the morning. No tags, no real collar, just an old flea collar. He looked like some kind of spaniel, lab mix. He followed me around the site for a while but kept running out into traffic.

I couldn't figure where he came from because we are doing utility work in the middle of a heavily commercialized are with no houses/appartments near by. I decided he must have gotten away from somebody.

When it became obvious that sooner or later he was going to be hit by a car, I rounded up some rope and started taking him around with me. I called the city animal control office to pick him up but they never showed up.

So at 11:00 when they opened I took him down to the pound. The 2 guys I left him with seemed very nice and the place was clean so I figured he would be in good hands.

But I still had a tear in my eye as I walked back to my car.

They said that if on one claims him after 5 days then he goes up for general adoption and that as the one who brought him in I could put a hold on him for first chance at adoption. I did.

My wife is gonna kill me if I bring home a dog. How do I get myself into these situations. :(

Aww it's a soft and kind heart that gets you into these kind of situations! You've done the right thing and who knows? Your doggy pal might be claimed by his worried owner/s -you never know!

(Don't tell anyone, I have an image to worry about. ;) )

I'm sure the girls would love him. I'm not to sure about the piggy.

You're not alone, CD. I'm willing to bet most of us have done something very similar at least once or twice.

We live way out in the middle of nowhere, and for some reason seem to be right where people drop off animals they don't want. Several years ago, I counted how many strays we were actually feeding in addition to my own two. Are you ready for this?

15 + my two dogs.

We eventually found homes for most of them, and the ones we didn't, we kept. We've even fostered horses for the county at times, off and on. There's been months we've spent more on food for the animals than we have our groceries.

You big softie. :)

I'd love to keep him (if nobody claims him) but I don't live in the country anymore. I live in a house the size of a postage stamp on a lot only a little bigger.

So do I and my dog is like having a bus in the house.

I know what you mean about dropping them off, I had to do that last year with my other dog, who was my dog's pup. They weren't getting along and I couldn't find anyone to take her. I cried all the way home after apologizing to her and leaving. OKay now I'm sad again....can't do animal threads.

*hugs abs*

We're a bunch of sappy sod's round here aren't we really?*L*

I'm totally the same myself. Animal or human. If they need help I feel I have to give it :)

Just 2 minutes with a dog and I'm hooked. As soon as I scrached behind his ears this morning I knew I was in trouble.

I am such a sap.

Because it takes such a small amount of affection to make a dog completely happy.

Because a city the size of Miami "puts to sleep" more than 200 dogs and an equal number of cats every week.

Because last year, some of those dogs were found still alive, stuffed into plastic garbage bags in the dumpster behind Animal Control.

Because your impulsive act of kindness makes the world a little less dark, a little less cruel.

Because you can.

As much trouble as it can be in the beginning, getting an animal used to your routine and adjusting your routine to accommodate her presence, there's always a moment later on when you can't bear knowing how close you came to never having her in your life. She might have ended up anywhere, with anyone, or just lived on the streets, all that tail-wagging potential, wasted.

Go get her, and look at it this way: How many times would Timmy have died in an abandoned well or mine shaft if Lassie hadn't been around?

I've found that in my life...I don't choose my pets.

They choose me.

Sounds like you've been chosen!

That pup will be happy to see you when you go back to get him!

Your wife will forgive you. My husband always forgives me!

I forgave my BF for the last two dogs he brought home. It was meant to be... YOu can't fight it.

Tell her the story, but shut up after the handover at the pound. Oh, and remember to say what happens if no-one adopts the pooch. There's a good chance your wife will say, "Aw, we can't let that happen!" all on her own.

That's why we've got two of the litter instead of one. When I picked up the one we'd chosen, I was told that there was now only one of the six without a home - and I passed that on to the ladies. They came home from doing the shopping and said: "We can't leave that last one with no home..."

I hate to be the one to break this to you cheerful, but you are a duck. Of course your wife will kill you if you bring home a dog, unless you are really kinky she is prolly a duck too. Even if you are into beastiality and she is a human she still knows what is best for you. The dog liked your smell, he was following you around checking out your rumproast to see if it was tender. Anywho it is nice that you care about this stray dog, if you end up bringing him home and your wife gets mad maybe you can put an ad in the paper "free dog to good home" and your wife will be patient enough to give you time to find a nice family to take him.

P.S. Save the dolphins, eat more ducks!!!

That pic is from September.

By contrast, they're now almost house trained!

The rational part of me is hoping that his real owner shows up to claim him.

But the emotional side is hoping that he doesn't get claimed. I'm a little worried about the call in 5 days because I'm not sure if I'll be able to say no.

I'm a little afraid of what my wife might say. She's not as much of a dog lover as I am.

CD, I understand completely. My last dog chose me. I was at a friend's house and someone came by with the last 2 of a litter of puppies she had found. I wouldn't even touch them. They were so damned cute, but I didn't want a dog and I knew if I touched them I'd be a goner.

Everone else over there was playing with these itty-bitty lil puppies (that were really too young to be weaned) and one of the lil things decided she didn't want to play. She stumbled in her clumsy little puppy way over to where I was sitting cross-legged on the floor, climbed into my lap, and promptly went to sleep. She owned me.

I didn't want a dog, but I wouldn't give up the 6 years I had with her before cancer claimed her for anything in this world.
