Just found a puppy outside my door. Anbody know how to tell how old a puppy is? He's got teeth. Looks like nobodies been taking care of him for a while. I gave him a bath and I'm wondering about putting a little advantage on him because he's certainly got bugs on him.

Look at his upper fangs first. If the pup has lost his "baby" fangs he/she is about 4 months. If the perm fangs are fully grown he/she is about 6 months.

Between weining (6 weeks) and 4 months it's hard to tell. That depends on the breed, size etc. It's usually a best guess. The pup is growing so fast at that time and going through so many changes it would require a professional to look at him/her to guess the age.

Next look at the incisors. A full set is about 7 months.

At 1 to 1-1/2 years you will begin to see a yellowing at the gum line on the upper fangs. After that age, who knows.

Thanks, he's definitely under four months. Guess I have to go call the dog warden. Going back to school tomorrow and so I can't take care of a puppy right now.

I always heard to tell a puppy's age you cut him in half and then count the rings.

I thought that was just for hedgehogs?

:)

Magica,

Jenny is exactly right. :) I used to work as a veterinary technician and we worked with all sorts of critters. The little feller sounds adorable!! :)

I'm impressed. How did you know? You a vet or vet tech?

Alright, who stole the puppy? I know it was one of you guys!

Afraid he managed to get out of the fenced area somehow today. Walked around with my dog but the pup didn't show up. At least he had a good meal and a warm place for the night. Hopefully, somebody who can keep him will find him.
