Man sentenced to 30 nights in doghouse

ORANGE, Texas - A man convicted of injuring his 11-year-old stepson must spend 30 nights in a 2-foot by 3-foot doghouse, a judge ordered Thursday.
Prosecutors said Curtis Lee Robin Jr. whipped Zachary Weigers with a car antenna, made him sleep in a doghouse and chop wood as punishment. Robin was indicted by an Orange County grand jury in August 2001 on charges of injury to child and faced 10 years in prison if convicted.
Instead, he agreed to a plea bargain that gave him a choice of 30 days in jail or 30 nights in a doghouse. Robin, who lives in nearby Vidor, chose the doghouse in the deal signed Feb. 17 so he can continue to work.
Investigators said when they first interviewed the 11-year-old in 2001, he was filthy and had mosquito bites all over his body.
Weigers, who now lives in Florida with his father, initially said Robin forced him to sleep in the doghouse without being fed. He later recanted that story in two letters. Robin denied the doghouse allegations, but went to court Thursday with the deal intact and didn't deny other claims of abuse.
"I apologize for my discipline of Zachary, but I want to restate that he never slept outside," Robin told the state District Judge Buddie Hahn.
Robin was to spend his first night in the doghouse in his front yard Thursday. Rain was in the weather forecast.
His attorneys argued he needed a bigger doghouse, a sleeping bag and mosquito netting, but Hahn said the state Thursday would provide a doghouse about the same size as the one the boy once claimed to have slept in. He said Robin could return to court later to ask for a larger space.
Robin is allowed to sleep with either his head or feet outside, since he cannot fit his entire body in the doghouse. An Orange County deputy will patrol his home periodically each night to ensure he serves his sentence as ordered.
Pat Anzaldi, the boy's maternal grandfather, said Robin deserved the punishment.
"I know Mr. Robin is very concerned with mosquito netting and weather, but my grandson was not presented with the same treatment," he said.
The deal also called for Robin to serve eight years' probation and a $1,000 fine.
