Let's say you're ready to post a story. You've worked on it and polished, edited and proofed it, and you think it's pretty good. So what do you do?

Do you just let it be posted and hope people will run into in the New Story section? Do you PM friends and tell them? Do you keep a list of readers for notification? Or do you post an advertisement in this or another board, where it really doesn't belong?

I use a mailing list through a yahoo group. Readers can then choose whether or not they would like to be notified of a new chapter/story. They also have the ability to take themselves off of the mailing list as well. It's about the most effective method I believe without intruding on everyone.

some people post a link in their sig line

personally I put a link up in my amatuer pic thread - lotsa my "fans" there check the stories out.

I also tell my friends.

And what is the title of your amateur pic thread, O Voluptuous beauty?

I have an e-mail list which I send details of a new story out on. It's all the people who've asked or being too polite to refuse being put on plus everybody who's given me feedback.

I also find it useful to put an extra link in my signature.

I have to think that a link in your sig is perhaps the most efficient way to getting a response from us writing types.

But other than that, all you can do is email friends, and hope for the best on the new stories listings.

I insert a long, silver needle into the head of a Voodoo Doll, speak the correct incantation, and everybody who might be interested, rushes to read my latest contribution to Lit.

Both of them! :(

Other than that, I advertise on my signature line. :D

So you are the one that took my Voodoo doll, huh? The stuffed animal my fiancee won for me at the State Fair just doesn't work the same. ;) :p

Chances are, that the long, silver needles will, however, work on your fiancee.

Put up blinking signs with roadmaps to the location! Great big, gaudy billboards! Ram it down their throats! Pry their eyes open with toothpicks and don't let them rest until they've read every damn word! Take it, I said! Tell me you loved it! Tell me!!!

Oh, sorry. Ahem.

(whispers) If you write it, they will read...

Nope, it doesn't happen that way, unfortunately.

So I do whatever I can: email friends, fellow authors I correspond with, etc.

When a reader sends an "I liked it" feedback my way, I ask them if they want to be notified when new stuff comes out. If so, up on the email list they go.

I'll post links in relevant threads and forums. For example, I put up a thread on the GB recently asking some questions for research purposes. Some of the responders displayed curiosity about the story I was using the info for. So I'll revive that thread when the story is posted, and insert a link.

I also put up a link in Story Feedback when it comes out on the New list, but that's more in hopes of getting constructive criticism than attracting readers.

Of course, the best way to get readers is to put up stories regularly. Name recognition and all that. That's one thing I haven't done

I don't put links in my sig line (didn't even have a sig line until a few days ago), but my www links to my Lit profile and submissions.

Not quite sure what else is possible on Lit without annoying the hell out of everyone.

What I've done is built a MSN community (free) and put all my stuff on it I have on the web and some stuff I haven't. I'm the only member, so everything on it is mine.

When I met people in chat, here, there, everywhere, I point them to it if they would like to read it. I have a tag line for it on my sig here and at other sites.

I haven't added to it lately, but will soon. Then, if someone wants to read just my stuff, and not search thu this or other sites I belong to, they can. If I find a guy who I think I might be intrested in and want to see if they will be scared away by my inner landscape, I can. If the guy doesn't even go there and read anything, I know they were just throwing me a line and weren't intrested in me per say as much as I have the right body parts for the moment.:p

If and when I get something published in the trades, believe me, I will let you all know. So you all can go out and buy my book.
