Recently a friend of mine got a prescription for Prozac of the doctor because he was depressed. Now he is in the local hospital having a full cycological evaluation. They really fucked him up.... Has anyone got any facts on Prozac hence everyone I have asked don’t have a good thing to say about it.has prozack helped anyone you know or has it had the same affect on anyone as it did my friend...Just curious

PROZAC SUCKS!!!!!

Whew.. sorry there.

I was treated for post-partum depression after my first son was born and that's what they put me on. It completely messes you up. There are so many other medications that are easier on the system than Prozac. Another one to watch out for is Effexor... I haven't known anyone to have a good experience with it.

I wish I had facts or data for you. Wellbutrin is the new "vvunder-drug" and I have to say that of the ten-plus people I know taking it, all have either quit smoking or have had alleviated depressive symptoms.

What helped me? Exercise... every day. Who'da thunk it?

Prozac...

...is a fantastic drug, and had helped hundreds of thousands of people. However, it is grossly over-prescribed, often without a proper psychological or physical evaluation. It is simply not appropriate for everyone in America, and yes there are loads of problems with this.

Just because your friend is now truly fucked up, do not automatically blame the meds. He or she may well have been headed for a little loony bin rest cure anyway.

The Internet is FULL of information on Prozac; just do a search for it.

if you had read my post duh
you would know that I wasn`t blaming anything, you very observant person...thankyou in advance for all comments on the subject

I was prescribed Prozac 2 years ago for depression and insomnia. I also had a psychological and medical evaluation.
The prozac really helped me out but better I was also hypothyroid and that also was a matter that caused my depression. So now along with synthroid the prozac is doing wonders for me. I'm back to my sappy, happy self everyday.
I do have friends who had problems with it. But I think it's all in the persons state of mind.
Hugs and Smiles

my mate did just get of heroin a few months previouse,, I thaught this may have played a part.....possibly did...
good to hear its not always having bad affects on people...
a little bit dope helps me when my head is up my arse, but to be ohnest I have been happy anyway lately....

Effexor's worked well for me, but I have heard one person who had bad side effects from it. I also take Ionamin which works well, also. Haven't given up the smokes yet, though. Maybe I need more exercise.

Celexa [depression]
Neurotin [mood swings, more hyper/anger]
Wellbutron [treats depression as well as the non orgasmic side effects of celexa]

Have them ask about those, they helped me...

My fiancee was on Prozac for a while for clinical depression, but didn't do well on it. He takes Paxil now & is doing much better. My brother in law takes Prozac & it has made a world of difference for him. It really does depend on the person, what other meds they take , diet & things like that. Did the doctor who prescribed the Prozac know about the heroin use? Heroin is some nasty stuff & I can imagine that it wouldn't mix well with other drugs, prescription or not. I hope things work out for him. You might want to do a search & find out some general information about Prozac that could enable you to help yoru friend through this. Good luck.

First off, you have to understand that there is depression, and then there is chemicle imbalance. Depression is when your environment affects you, such as someone died and you are upset. It is natural. Chemicle imbalance is exactly that, a chemicle imbalance in your brain. Different drugs work for one and different drugs work for the other. Problem is, most people, doctors included, do not understand this.

For years I said no to taking any anti-depressant meds. I don't even take Tylenol when I have a headache. Finally, after having bizarre mood swings where I would try to slam butcher knives in my wrist for no reason, I talked to a specialist about meds. They evaluated me and came to the conclusion that my brain does not process seratonin correctly. They put me on Lithium, and that made me a zombie.

Then they tried Xoloft and that fucked me up.
So they went to Prozac and so far that has worked wonders. I take one pill a day and I am happy. No weird moods, no sadness, just feel normal. That is my case anyway.

I agree though that anti depressant drugs are TOTALLY over prescribed. That was my main reason for not wanting to take meds for so long.

Just to give you an example: I stopped taking the meds three weeks ago, and I hacked off my hair. i started taking them the next day.

I guess that means I am a bonifide nut case.

LOL! Me too hon Snuggles you!

Only its been over a month since my last meds..dont you hate it when you cant aford stuff.. sighs

Ever since my son was murdered 18 months ago, several people have said that I should take meds for the depression I now suffer. I have resisted, mainly because of past substance abuse problems. I have a great therapist who is working with me to keep me off the meds. My fiancee would not have survived this past 18 months without the Paxil. I wish his depression was a chemical imbalance, sometimes I think it would be easier on him. Zoloft seems to really whack people out, I haven't heard of anyone who had good luck while they were taking it. My sweetie was diagnosed 4 years ago & the meds were a last resort for us. Luckily, our therapist is working with us to keep us on somewhat of an even keel when we have the really bad days & we aren't over medicated.

I still do have an occasional mood swing, So I ask myself Damn did I forget my meds. After consulting my doctor he thought it might be my diet, and sleeping habits.
So now I have to remember to get the proper rest at least 4 hours a day, and eat properly.
I also find reading these helps alot too.

The few people I know personally who have taken Prozac have done well on it. I was the only exception. I have dealt with mood disorders and depression my entire life and in 1992 tried an anti-depressant for the first time...Prozac. Emotionally and mentally I felt normal and even keel while on it, but after about a month I developed an extreme physical allergic reaction. I have NEVER had pain like this. I had the hives, but also a rheumatoid artheritic reaction. Every joint in my body (from jaw to toes) were randomly aching, burning, cramping. I went to the hospital and had shots to reverse the reaction, and took various artheritis medications. I was terrified that it wouldn't improve. I couldn't sleep, walk, bend joints, anything; I was crying and in pain continuously. That intense level of reaction lasted about three - four days, but it took almost two months on consistent anti-inflammatory medication for the symptoms to fully fade. My psychologist did finally find information reporting this as a rare reaction to Prozac. Hence I refuse to try any similar mental health medications, as I do not know what in the medicine caused my suffering.

I agree with some of the prior posts that medications can be life savers and are very necessary, but I firmly believe they are NEVER the answer alone and are WAY OVER prescribed. I had been in counseling for 6 years before trying the Prozac and continue couseling to this day to maintain my health. People so often want a pill to fix things and life isn't like that. Definitely if one seeks a mental health medication I recommend doing so through a psychiatrist or psychologist working with a medical doctor. I would not take medication prescribed only on the basis of the evaluation of a general practitioner or other M.D. because although they have a basic knowledge of all health concerns, mental health and science are not their area of specialization.
