On January 11 I got an alert on the story side that @Andreas_Kreuz had favorited one of my stories, Twelve Maxbridge Street. Every day I looked to see if it was a favorite, or maybe in one of his lists. It hasn't shown up yet. Any explanation?

I have had numerous notifications in the past year or so that someone has added one of my stories to Favorites. But when I check their page, I never find my story on their Favorites list, and the count of Favorites on my story doesn't increase. I could see one or two people changing their mind and removing a story, but this seems to happen every time. What gives? I see some comment about private lists, but I rarely see those, and they shouldn't trigger the favorites notification.

@AG31 A member can create additional "Reading Lists", and they can make them either Public or Private. In the case of Andreas_Kreuz, he has created a "bdsm list" and he added your Twelve Maxbridge Street story to that list.

@lexlogan8, you will not see the private lists

Thanks Lumiere_Amie. This still seems wrong -- if I'm going to be notified, then it ought to be counted toward's the story's number of favorites; if not, I would rather not be notified, or I'd like the notification to say "added to a list" rather than "added to Favorites." Also, I see that if I look myself up as an author, rather than looking at my works via my home page, there is a "lists" count, which almost always is greater than the count of favorites. It would be nice to have the lists count in the page available via the home page.

There's a couple of interesting answers, but I've recently had a reader favourite the same story three times within five minutes. I suspect that 'twitchy finger' may also play a part. We're notified when a story is favourited but not when its unfavoured. I set little store to Favs - they're meaningless to me.

Perhaps the three times were three different lists. I view Favorites as an alternate "stamp of approval": some stories attract a lot of Favorites (and/or Lists) despite middling ratings.

You are correct. If a reader selects either 'Add Story To Favorites' or 'Bookmark Story', you will receive a message that they added your story to Favorites. Also, if they meant to Bookmark it but instead added it to Favorites, and then correct their error by unselecting Favorite, you don't get notified of that action. They might also Favorite or Bookmark your story so they can come back and read it again, and then unFavorite or unBookmark when they finish reading the story. The bottom line is that the number of Favorite notifications you get, and the actual number of Favorites you see on the story will likely not match as time goes on. The 'Official' Favorites count is the one shown in your Control Panel. That is the number used in the sorting process when you select to sort by Favorites. I too get a little dopamine rush when I see those notifications come in. 😁
