Just to remind you all that it's true what they say...

I was teaching a friend how to skateboard... and showing off, I suppose. My first introduction to the world of skating was to take him to a short but crazily steep hill by the local technical college, where you have to make a tight turn into a car park to avoid going into the far wall. He stood at the bottom on traffic watch, while I whizzed down it to an audience of old ladies who'd just had blue rinses done on the cheap.

I'd never done it before, but I sailed down it, and my friend was suitably impressed.

We then moved on to a much gentler incline, where I let him have a go. While I was instructing him, I decided to have a smoke. The positioning of his feet was all wrong, so after a while I jumped on the board to demonstrate how to stand. By this point, though, I was kind of high, and in the middle of relating a story filled with suspense and intrigue... and I forgot I was on the board. :(

I took a step back, and suddenly became aware of the board travelling at great speed. Then the board wasn't underneath my feet anymore... In fact, nothing was.

For what seemed like several seconds, my body glided backwards in an arc, almost in the style of an Olympic high-jumper.

... but there was no mattress to land on.

I bruised my arse :(

And the worst thing of all? The board was stationary at the time

It bloody hurt, too. I feel like I don't want to sit down for the next week.

*kisses* for your bruises.

Thank you, both. I'll live - I just won't sit down this side of Christmas.

I don't know if I could even stand having my arse kissed right now, even by Madonna, and that's saying something... :(

Maybe I'll phone in sick tomorrow :catroar:

ouchhhhh! :(

I'd volunteer to kiss it, but I think the competition would knock me down to get to you! ;)
Ditto.

It's what we call a "parking lot fall" in the X-C skiing community. I broke a finger that way one time - the only bone I ever broke skiing.

It's fucking embarrassing, isn't it?

Poor thing. The last time I was on a skateboard, I was about 7 months pregnant and teaching the 8-year-old next door neighbor how to do 360's.

My husband was not amused.

Someone teach Grace to swim, please. One should know how not to drown.

I'll start: Hold your breath, go underwater, assume a horizontal position, extend your arms straight out in front of you, and sweep them back smartly and smoothly all the way around to your hips, cupping your hands to push water backwards. Repeat. Over an over. After a couple sweeps, when you start getting the hang of it, kick your lower legs up and down, smoothly and smartly but not jerkily.

Oh yeah - come up for a breath of air every 10 -15 seconds or so.

That's it, basically. Everything else is an embellishment.

LOL! i know the technique- but i can only swim about 15 metres. I'f im in open water i freak out if im out of my depth. I'll jump in the swimming pool the deep end and all but i can't really swim. I would not be able to stop myself from drowning.

I went snorkelling- and we weren't wearing life jackets...i went only so far before i refused to go any further without going back to terra firma to get a life jacket

I havent engaged in any form of water emersion aside from bathing in over 3 years. If i were to ever get that naked in public i'd have to wear board shorts- else i would raise hell if not allowed.

I don't miss it at all. All I ever got from it was sore knees and palms.

Hmmm.... does that sound wrong somehow...

The only thing that ever gave me sore knees and palms was tile-work.

Skateboarding, however, I loved to do. Was pretty damn good at it too, actually. My favorite was half-pipe, but I spent most of my time in the street.
:)

That's me & skates. Spent most of 1975-1978 on 'em. I was gooooooood. :D

Just bought myself new inlines with my Christmas giftcard. Can't wait 'til the weather breaks so I can blade on the river walk.

I spent most of my time face down or getting out a box of band-aids.

Mountain bikes were more my speed.

Same boat (and seeing as how neither of us can swim we'd better just stay in the boat and hope it drifts to shore soon ;) )

I really enjoyed in-line skating as well, but I never was as good on them as I was on old classic roller skates. My first pair ever had *whispers* steel wheels.
At any rate, I really loved the in-line experience. Had fun with street hockey on them and also got some excellent ass-tone and leg-tone with them. It came at a sore-as-hell price, but damn was it worth it.
:D

I haven't been on a skateboard since around, oh, 1965  , but have put thousands of miles on mountain bikes in the northwoods of Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota, mostly on old logging roads, including some citizen races. Also, back when I was doing marathon ski races (also of the citizen variety) I put in hundreds of miles on roller skis on paved roads, which is summer training for cross country skiing. I was pretty awesome in my day! (And while hardly awesome, aren't half-bad yet . . . :) )

I can't skateboard, and I definitely can't ice-skate... weak ankles. My husband played hockey, he's got ankles and calves you wouldn't believe!

I have an ex-hockey player, myself. :)

I love my mountain bike. It's been a while since I've had a chance to get out on it, but all she needs is a little grease and a good hard ride.

Rollerskates! Ahhh, sweet memories... had a great time on them in the '70s. High speed downhill was the best.

Hang on. That's also how I broke my arm...
