Petr Pavel has just been elected President of the Czech Republic in a landslide. This is more important than usual because Pavel a former Nato General was elected on a platform of decency, honesty and integrity of both institutions and politicians. He is firmly committed to Western Democratic values and in particular supports the Nato position on Ukraine.
In contrast his defeated rival, Billionaire businessman Andrej Babis ran a populist agenda based substantially on his own personality. In the past he joked with Putin asking him how "to get rid of journalists" and on a visit to China said he was there to learn how they "stabilized society." His past as a tax avoider through "creative accounting," and his association with dubious deals and legislation to support his companies at the expense of small business did not help. In particular Babis committed himself to not supporting Ukraine.
Pavel is conservative in foreign affairs and economic issues, but describes himself as a social progressive/libertarian on issues like gay marriage, women's rights. He is very anti political correctness and observed that when he was a Nato commander it got in the way of people saying what they really think.
Very broadly in US terms Pavel appears to occupy similar ground to the centre and right of the Democrat Party and the older style Republicans (Romney, Collins, etc). Perhaps the most interesting point however is that by picking a political cleanskin as candidate his supporters got a 58% to 42% win. A lesson to learn in candidate choice perhaps?
