I am curious, my girlfriend recently went off the pill. WE want to continue having sex, with just condoms, but we do not want to get her pregnant. Can anyone give me info on the chances of her getting pregnant by just usinga condom? or link me somewhere that can help.

much appreciated

The information link Webber 1998 gave is good. The operative word is perfect use.

Condoms are better than nothing but they are subject to leaking either through holes, tearing or slipping off during withdrawal. If you enjoy a nice long afterglow with your girl friend as you go soft your sperm can leak out the top and into her.

Also, from personal experience. If either of you gets real horny you may throw caution to the wind and go bear back and you may wind up parents. That's how my first wife and I had our kid.

Be extra careful. Are you two ready to be parents?

Is there any particular reason your girlfriend went off the pill?

Have you tried other methods (the sponge, spermicide) with condoms?

If she can't be on the particular pill she was on, has she tried other types? Or depo?

Hi bigboy, perhaps you and your gf could look into depo-provera. It's an injected contraceptive, she only needs to go to her gyne/doctor 4x a year, and it's 99.9% effective (better than condoms hehe). Check out the website http://www.depoprovera.com/

if you're not on the pill and using condoms, you should also use a spermacidal foam or something of that nature.

condoms are very safe if used right.
There is another way, the "temperature controlled one"
Take each morning your gf's temperature. Women are only fertile in the mid of cycle.

Doctors have a name for women who use the rhythm (temperature) method: mothers.

Huh? Women are only fertile in the middle of their period?

Okay I've been out of school for awhile but it seems I remember something in biology class about a woman's period was a way of getting rid of unfertilized eggs. I mean call me crazy, but I'm pretty sure that was what the guy said.

And gee, my wife and I never have sex when she is the middle of her period but we have two kids. Maybe it was the milkman. Wait, that can't be, there hasn't been a milkman in the neighborhood for thirty years. I know, it must have been that damned stork. Yeah, yeah I bet the stork did it. Not brought the babies. Sheesh, everyone knows storks don't bring babies. But maybe the rat bastard knocked her up when she was in the middle of her period.

Seriously N8Dreams, you give some whacky inputs but this an EXTREMELY serious issue. You are talking about the creation of life here. And you never know what advice folks will listen to. Please either better explain yourself or know what you're talking about.

Maybe I misunderstood something. If so I apologize.

Im sorry, but Im right. Pregnancy can only happen after ovulation. Ovulation happens in the mid of period. Time of ovulation can watched by taking the morning temperature. If you dont believe in me look up some medical books.

slow down.

after menstruation the first week is safe.
The next week is uncertain.
The third week is quite dangerous, its most fertile.
The last week is uncertain too.
Sperms lifespan in female bodies is about 48 hours. The time an egg needs to move from fallopian tube to uterus is about 7 days.
Eggs get fertilized in the fallopian tube, not in uterus.

Emerald Eyes is correct. In actuality, no time is safe. Only safe way is to use some form of birth control. I like the depo shot, but I'm not on anything anymore. I have found I am unable to have children. Some what good, some what bad.

Yeah it runs in the family. I was on birth control "just in case", but i have thought about and if i am lucky enough to get pregant then i would take it. So far its been over a year and nothing. Maybe one day, or there is always adoption if I really wanted to have children.;)

While this is the norm for the majority of women it's not ALWAYS true. Example....my own "normal" menstual cycle lasts about 4 months. Explain to me how I would use this method then huh??

Thats how I became one. But the rhythm method we used didn't include temp taking. We also got really lazy on it. But it's worked for the past year and a half, combined w/ the pull out method. It's a wonder that I'm not preggo again. LOL :D

Ok, from everything I've read that doesn't quite add up. Your cycle begins on the 1st day of period. On the average 28 day cycle, ovulation should occur on the 14th day. You can only concieve on that day, BUT the female body will nourish the sperm up to 7+ days before that. So you can have sex on day 7 (period just ended) not have sex on ovulation, but still get pregnant. Ovulation varies a lot due to many reasons, the only thing for sure is that your period always starts exactly 14 days after ovulation. Thats why there's a 2 week period of uncertainess. You can get preg on your period if your cycle is screwed up and you ovulate then, but its very rare. There are ways to tell when your are close to ovulation. The thickness of the mucus.

Unless you no longer want children, then DepoProvera is not a good idea. For many, it takes several years before they start to ovulate again. For me, it took over two years for me to get a period after stopping it, and I had been on it for one year.

Many Drs. are now saying if you ever want children, then reconsider the use of DP.
