Two years later. . .
She stood there looking out over the lake. Her eyes closed as she breathed deep the scent of the pines and cedar woods that surrounded her. Tara had everything she ever wanted except her husband. The divorce papers had been delivered to her a month after he disappeared and for six months she tried to find him. But it was pointless. No matter how much money she paid out she had a feeling Jared didn’t want found. So she stopped. She didn’t want to. Everything inside her told her that he was supposed to be with her.
The nightmares were not as frequent as they had been. Now she dreamed of love she could never have and memories of Jared that were full of both love and heartache. This morning she woke and wondered what her life meant now. She needed something, someone, anything to feel the void in her life.
Jared had made her a wealthy woman who lacked for nothing, but she did.
She turned away and headed back into the log cabin and picked up the small puppy she’d picked up from the side of the road two days ago. Once she bathed him she was thrilled to discover a small tan of fluff and named it Toast. It was a mixed breed... a mutt by all general standards, but over the last two days it had become a source of laughter to Tara.
Once she had removed her robe and gotten dressed for the day she headed into the small town for supplies. As she picked her way through the produce a movement caught her eye and for a moment she thought she was seeing things. She swallowed hard as she blinked back the tears of disbelief. There in front of her just a few feet away was Jared.
He stared back at her and started walking. Her tears fell and her fingers reached out to touch him.
“Where have you been? I’ve searched for you . . . why now? Why are you here?” She whimpered.
“I don’t know. I wasn’t supposed to be here. I was supposed to stay away and leave you alone, but I had to see you,” he answered
She sniffed back the tears and closed her eyes, opened them again and stared back at him. “How long?” she asked. “How long are you staying?”
