Tonight in Poli Sci, the topic of pornography and obscenity came up. Specifically, if government should have a hand in it, if so, to what extent.
The class has 27 people in it .. pretty even mix of gender and age groups.
Anyhow - it was so damned funny, I had to bite my lip at some points. I hadn't noticed how much being a part of the Lit community had changed my comfort level in speaking of sexual matters. I was the only person that wasn't blushing, using code words and beating around the bush (no pun intended .. no really..)
There were many people in the class who thought it was a good idea to ban porn outright because (and this is a quote) "People who look at pornography become violent, obsessed with abnormal sex and eventually addicted to it" Also, that article (it was posted here, but I can't remember what it was from, so help me out if you do) was brought up that said that women in porn pretty much don't know what they're doing, and are forced into it.
To this I brought up the fact that movies, video games are also said to promote violence, obsession, and that there are many things that can become addictive (in the sense the person meant - that it took up an inappropriate amount of time). I then asked if they actually thought goverment should ban anything that was addictive, incited violent behavior or obsession.
The answer was yes.
Yikes, just yikes.
Funny that when we got to gun control .. suddenly this same person wanted the right to own any firearm they so chose...
