Pope: Working too hard bad for the spirit

CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy (AP) — Working too hard, even for those leading the Catholic Church, is bad for the spirit, Pope Benedict XVI said Sunday as he greeted tourists at his summer residence outside Rome.

During his traditional weekly appearance to bless the faithful, Benedict quoted from writings of St. Bernard in the 12th century meant for the popes of his time on the subject of overwork.

Benedict quoted the saint as advising pontiffs to "watch out for the dangers of an excessive activity, whatever ... the job that you hold, because many jobs often lead to the 'hardening of the heart,' as well as 'suffering of the spirit, loss of intelligence.'"

"That warning is valid for every kind of work, even those involved in the governing of the church," 79-year-old Benedict said.

Having had a vacation in the Italian Alps in July, Benedict is spending what remains of August and much of September, in the papal palace in Castel Gandolfo, a lakeside town in the Alban Hills southeast of Rome.

The pontiff will interrupt his holidays to make a day trip on Sept. 1 to a religious sanctuary on Italy's Adriatic coast and to fly to his homeland, Germany, for a pilgrimage Sept. 9-14.

Good for him!

It's time somebody stood up against "the man" and said "enough is enough"!

I think he's right there. *nods* too much work is not good for anyones soul.

Who'd ever thought the Pope would blaspheme like that?

It's good to work, work hard. Every hour of the day should be filled with work. And preferably for the simple and full reward of food and shelter.

How else are we going to compete?

Psst. I'm being ironic and cynical here. ;)

Therefore seith Seint Jerome: "Dooth somme goode dedes that the devel, which is oure enemy, ne fynde yow nat unocupied."

Nice sentiment.

When i find a job, I'll tell them that the Pope thinks we all work too hard.

He's right, but I doubt that he has much influence on any boss I've ever had.

Work work work...

:p What about playing too hard? I'm pretty sure that's what ruined my chances at redemption...

Doesn't this kinda fly in the face of what all those past Popes tolk the folk who were building and building and building their cathedrals?

I'm just sayin'.....

Even popes look at things differently.

I guess the new guy is thinking about the 7th day being a day of rest -how many people these days get a full day of rest a week?
