Political message at work

At work today, someone accidentally forwarded me a political joke favoring political views I do not share. Since the joke was not intended for me and I was not offended, I didn't respond. However, I am curious as to whether someone with stronger political convictions would have responded to the sender. So? If a coworker you did not know particularly well sent you a political joke you found unfunny or offensive, how would you respond, if at all?

More curious than anything, though ... I was just wondering if people here are more forgiving of political differences in real life.

happened to me once.. somebody intentionally sent me a joke intending to mock my politics.. i sent one back mocking hers

never heard another peep out of her again

I think I would respond if it was intentional or mean-spirited. In my case, I think the sender thought he was preaching to the choir, so I didn't let him know I had received the message in error.

In real life, I try not to engage people in political discussions unless they volunteer their perspectives. Again, I think I was wondering how political people are in real life. Do you wear your politics on your sleeve or do you save it for this forum?

send out a "generic" email to everyone asking to be left off the mass mailings that are not work related. Don't forget to say please and thank-you.

Good idea.

I would just ignore it, unless it was intentional, then I would just find one I thought was funny and send an email back.
If you send a mass email saying "don't email unless its about work"

I would think you
A) were oversensitive
B) had no sense of humor and
C) are unapproachable

Also, I don't bring up politics in public often
but if its being discussed then I don't pretend
I don't have an opinion.

Maybe all of you should be working instead of sending political emails back and forth.

i'd tell 'em to fuck off, but that's just me. i hate emails like that even when i agree with them.

My wife gets pissed off when I say something bad about Obama.

I'd defend the sucker too, if he paid me for two years to set on my ass and watch Television and play on the computer instead of finding a Job.

She's gained so much weight I'm not sure she could hold down a job where she had to actually to physical labor.

Yeah...she is a Democrat.

Just Saaaying...:D

In what way is she getting paid?

Unemployment.

He keeps extending the time limit of collecting a check. (She hasn't worked since, June will be two years.)

My wife is the type to take full advantage of anything like that.

Me...I work my ass off about 60-66 hours a week or more on average.

you say "your wife"
as if you aren't also benefiting from it as well

I hate them to- but I usually don't say anything. I'm not offended because I don't care. It's way easier not to care then to have to do shit and talk to stupid people. Stuff people say doesn't really get me mad when it's political, because either way it's stupid. What difference is it going to make? They're just blowing smoke- and like you said, s/he thought he was only sending it to other people s/he thought would like it.

You should post it here. I wanna see what all the fuss is about. :D

I work with a political blowhard who won't shut the fuck up to save his life.

It's actually been good practice for me to learn to be more patient and meditate internally and block out his offensive ramblings.

Soo no, I would not respond at all.

"Would you want your sister to marry one?"

One of the great moments of my professional career (shaddup Byron):

Back in the 1990s I received a chain email at work that contained some AJ-class slurs against black people, ending with the statement "would you want your sister to marry one?"

Now, like Karen Kraft I do NOT have a sister. But I hit "reply all" on the email, copied my department head, the head of HR and the president of the company, and wrote "Actually, my sister DID marry one, and I will make myself available to discuss the pros and cons of having an African American brother-in-law with anyone at anytime."

The three stooges who were responsible for forwarding the initial "joke" email were immediately suspended without pay for a week and were required to undergo two days of "sensitivity training" as a condition of returning to work. I also received three very nice apologies delivered in person.

That, my friends, is how you deal with them.

Damn, where the fuck did you work that they thought that was acceptable?
