Political correctness is about power, nothing more

I've spent the last twenty plus years trying to understand the motivations behind political correctness and the extreme, sometimes even violent, support for it among those who advocate it.

I've come to the conclusion the almost hysterical obsession over "racism" and other post-modern alleged victimhoods, when so many of the alleged instances of it seem so triffling and petty, is actually about political power for the alleged victimized groups (or for those using them as a means to maintain power for themselves, which I'll leave for a later post or thread).

As one example, with all the real tangible problems in the world, why do we hear so much about "racism" in sports, meaning some drunk fans, often in Europe, shouting some insults about a player's ethnic background? I mean who really gives a flying-you-know-what whether a few drunks who paid admission to a sports event shout some insults at highly paid professional athletes. Seriously, why on earth is this even an issue worth mentioning much less wasting precious political and moral capital trying to "stamp out"? It makes zero rational sense unless you see it as part of a much deeper and more pervasive control agenda.

Take this example from wikipedia about EPL team Tottenham Hotspur:

...The club, as with many clubs in London, has a large Jewish following and this has led to much antisemitic provocation against Tottenham supporters. Tottenham supporters, Jewish and non-Jewish, united against this and adopted the nickname "Yids", developing chants to support this. Many fans view adopting "Yid" as a badge of pride, helping defuse its power as an insult. Today it is mainly used to distinguish Tottenham fans from other football supporters. Many fans, however, disagree with the use of the name "Yid", and believe it will only attract more racism. In April 2011, Jewish comedian, author and Chelsea-supporter David Baddiel produced a short film stating that the anti-semitic chanting is as unacceptable as the abuse still suffered by black footballers, and must be stamped out accordingly...

Why must a few drunk morons shouting something at a stupid soccer game be "stamped out." With all the real problems in the world, this seems to me about as important as whether crab grass is declared the office herbacious plant of Missouri. Something doesn't add up here if you even stop to think about the whole thing rationally for more than 10 seconds. Obviously, something much deeper and more sinister is at play with all this stuff (the above is simply one tiny example).

I hear you. I get sick and tired of hearing about cancer and cancer awareness programs. Geeze. Especially when some of these program really are all about a way to make a buck, not about actually helping those who have cancer.

It took you twenty years to realize that members of dis-empowered groups want more power?

Jeez, I always thought it had somethinorother to do with the fact that for most of American history, white Americans regarded black Americans as inferior mentally, morally and emotionally by heredity.

It is also a comforting mechanism for those who would trade liberty for the chimera of security. If the world sounds like you think it should be ordered, then things probably are in order. When order fails to produce economic equality of outcome, then groupthink also has a double bonus of enemies who do not think properly and can be blamed when the collective dreams of the altruistic moral busybodies do not materialize.

Well, you seem to be an expert on group think, AJ..What's your opinion of paranoid delusion syndrome?

Did it not take a dedicated groupthink to own and keep human beings?

A self-reenforcing pattern of thought that is now employed by so many, probably best exemplified by RoryN of politically correct affirmative-action racism and the angry old white man bromide?

Does not Justin Bieber rely on a certain groupthink to sell his records?

:D ;) ;)

tee hee

When I oppose or differ from the groupthink "in-touch" topics of the day, do I not get called a bitter old white Republican terrified of losing his power and prestige?

Geeze. Could you write in plain English? Your computer science/math background is showing again. I kind of figured you wouldn't answer the question. Who cares about Bieber. You listen to him?

I have no opinion on it.

At all. I have that feeling towards anything that I know nothing of. You will not find me with the Cain mutineers just because Cap'n Queeg is looking for his missing strawberries.

The Beebs?

No. Remember, I am out of touch.

[tone=hushed whisper] I hear dead musicians...

No. I have been an early riser ever since the Marines.

This is my quiet time before the women wake up and the daily rush begins. I like it like that...

Plus, Wat thinks he is a funny guy.

But I was a smart Marine.

I was not in a foxhole with Charlie trying to kill me.

I was in the weather office directing pilots.

No they do not all say they were in the 99th percentile.

;) ;) vette's probably a slim, by the seat of his pants, 90th! :p

While I understand the attempt, I think there is a huge difference between the political racism/sexism/ageism this country experiences and a group of drunk fans at a soccer game. The very notion that people could be "stamped out" speaks to the center of the debate.
You can't expect people who read this thread to compare apples if you're going to put a mixed fruit bowl on the table.

Power or control?

Any word or phrase can be turned into an epithet, all that's required is the proper tone and emphasis. The 'visually impaired' are still blind and the 'hearing impaired' are still deaf. All of the softly spoken polysyllabics in the world won't change the facts.

And how many have stopped to consider that virtually all of these new found words and phrases to describe people and their condition in life have primarily been cooked up by privileged white liberals with their roots deeply embedded in the halls of academia?
