Staying with relatives over a summer, I happened upon a copy of "Lucky" by Jackie Collins. I began grabbing everything written by her. Looking back, everything she wrote had the same plot lines and usually the same ending, but she can sell her ass off.

I have no trouble thinking up plots, it's the actual writing of the story that gives me problems.

I was about to say this myself. Plots and casts of characters come spontaneously to me. I have a fairly easy time with scenes and dialogue. I consider myself deficient with description.

My songwriting software, called Masterwriter, has a bunch of lists, like cities, lakes, mountain ranges, car models, drink names, famous people, and on and on. Besides the usual - thesaurus, rhyme dictionary (including near rhymes) - it has a phrase compiling list. Type in 'dog' and find three pages of phrases with 'dog' in it. The software is $200, so it's an expensive toy, but for guys like me, it's a business expense, which makes it tax deductible.

Me too. I sort of see falling back on some sort of mechanical generator external to the writer as being hack work.

I use the J.K. Rowling approach. Create such fun and memorable characters in your first novel that sequels are easy as pie. I have a triology planned, but it could turn into seven, if they sold like Harry Potter. Fat chance. LOL

I don't see the problem in using it for inspiration, though. Say you've got a specific category or genre to fill, for whatever reason. A site like that might provide a lightbulb idea.

Sure, I don' see a problem with doing it either. I just don't consider someone who does it possessing the full elements of being a creative writer when they can't do it out of their own mind and observation.

Shakespeare comes to mind as someone who gets borrowed from quite often, especially in screenplays. You can see loose versions of his plots in many modern stories.

From what I've read/heard most of his were rip-offs.

As they say, "It's how you tell it!"

That's always - that bare handful of times (take the pun or ignore it) - I've done it, been my starting point: a woman I'd like to fuck. Once I have a real woman, in a real situation, I can first fantasize it, then write it.

I'm not professional enough to work from an abstract.
