I just said this to Snoopy in a PM (I hope you don't mind me mentioning this, hon): I just got immersed in all the political threads and was beginning to despair at humanity. Everyone seems to be laying into each other, ripping each other to shreds, when at this time, more than at any time I have ever known, we should all be uniting and showing love and concern for each other. It just gets me down. I'm feeling very sad right now, about so many things.

I know we all need to talk, to argue and debate, even, but we should never lose sight of the issues that are of absolute importance. I think you'll find, when it comes down to it, none of us are so different afterall.

I know some people think these lyrics are cheesy and corny (and perhaps hollow sentiments written in the name of comercialism), but they say all of the sentiments I wish to express, and more (although they are a bit overly religious for my own standpoint, the meaning is the same). Please take a moment to read them.

Yes, it's the Black Eyed Peas...

What's wrong with the world, mama
People livin' like they ain't got no mamas
I think the whole world addicted to the drama
Only attracted to things that'll bring you trauma
Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorism
But we still got terrorists here livin'
In the USA, the big CIA
The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK
But if you only have love for your own race
Then you only leave space to discriminate
And to discriminate only generates hate
And when you hate then you're bound to get irate, yeah
Badness is what you demonstrate
And that's exactly how anger works and operates
N**, you gotta have love just to set it straight
Take control of your mind and meditate
Let your soul gravitate to the love, y'all, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love

It just ain't the same, always unchanged
New days are strange, is the world insane?
If love and peace is so strong
Why are there pieces of love that don't belong
Nations droppin' bombs
Chemical gasses fillin' lungs of little ones
With the ongoin' sufferin' as the youth die young
So ask yourself is the lovin' really gone
So I could ask myself really what is goin' wrong
In this world that we livin' in people keep on givin' in
Makin' wrong decisions, only visions of them dividends
Not respectin' each other, deny thy brother
A war is goin' on but the reason's undercover
The truth is kept secret, it's swept under the rug
If you never know truth then you never know love
Where's the love, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the truth, y'all, come on (I don't know)
Where's the love, y'all

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love
The love, the love

I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin'
Selfishness got us followin' our own direction
Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids want to act like what they see in the cinema
Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead in spreading love we're spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down
There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under
Gotta keep my faith alive till love is found

People killin', people dyin'
Children hurt and you hear them cryin'
Can you practice what you preach
And would you turn the other cheek

Father, Father, Father help us
Send us some guidance from above
'Cause people got me, got me questionin'
Where is the love (Love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)

Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)
Where is the love (The love)

So right, Lou.

What's so funny about peace love and understanding?

(don't have the lyrics, but that says it all)

pax people,

Kepler, who believed each planet had musical notes, said that the earth had 'mi-fa-mi'-- which can be remembered as 'MIsery, FAmine, and MIsery.'

I've always found that political topics are the easiest way to argue with someone else, because there will always be someone who disagrees with your point of view. Which is the main reason I avoid them whenever possible.

The only Political thread I ever got involved with made me so angry, I wanted to hurt the person who started it. He was putting Americans down for not coming into the second world war early enough. I saw red because I knew how many thousands of Americans and brits had lost their lives in that war. I prefer to remember there sacrifice as opposed to unimportant political points.

Since then I don't join these threads, it's too hard to see another point of view that you strongly disagree with.

Lou, I just pm-ed you that I don't mind you mentioning at all and I'll know say it publicly.
And I also want to add that you have chosen the perfect lyrics for what you feel right now.
Especially this bit
'I feel the weight of the world on my shoulder
As I'm gettin' older, y'all, people gets colder
Most of us only care about money makin'
Selfishness got us followin' our own direction
Wrong information always shown by the media
Negative images is the main criteria
Infecting the young minds faster than bacteria
Kids want to act like what they see in the cinema
Yo', whatever happened to the values of humanity
Whatever happened to the fairness in equality
Instead in spreading love we're spreading animosity
Lack of understanding, leading lives away from unity
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' under
That's the reason why sometimes I'm feelin' down
There's no wonder why sometimes I'm feelin' under
Gotta keep my faith alive till love is found'

So true and I feel the same.
So what I do in these situations and what I'd recommend now,
just remind yourself that there still ARE some good people in this world. It could be anybody, a celebrity that stands up for something, a politician that does not lie (hard to find), a CEO of a company that might NOT sack a lot of people for money, people that unite and stand up against 'injust' wars, people that are courageuos enough to express their right opinions. (even if it's 'only' here at Lit), or it could be an everday person you meet on the street who still has some manners, nice behaviour or so.

So I might get a little cheesy myself now but I'll have to say it with my favourite movie:
'What are we holding onto?' - 'That there is some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for'
(Mind that fighting does NOT necessarily mean weapons and killing)

So true, Lou. I recently posted on the depression thread in support and empathy of many AHers to whom I'm usually totally polarized when it comes to all things political.

Likewise, several of those same people had nothing but kind words for me in response.

So you are very right...when it comes to things that really matter, like depression in this case, we are so very much on the same page. It's so encouraging to get that reality check every once in awhile.

Yea, this thread was cool.

Love 'n peace and all that.

You either keep your hope or lose it and be done.

Have a nice day while you can,

Chimpy

Where is the love?

It's right here baby!

(I just went on a rant on a political thread, feel bad now. Good to mix it up a bit I guess)

Thanks for all the replies and for the great words you have all added to this thread.

I don't know whether or not the poets will thanks me for this, but I feel I should do this anyway...

I want to dedicate this thread to the memory of smithpeter.

With love and respect,

Lovely gesture Lou, I read about his passing and even though I don't know him, a family member has passed.

Condolences to all who feel his absence.:rose:

Nice thoughts Lou

Election years have a way of fractionating lots of people. I know it always disturbs me greatly to find that so many people do not agree with what is obviously the correct way to look at things :D

Needling aside, I want to complement you on your choice of lyrics. I am not at all familiar with this group, but being named for one my favorite all time veggies, I will try to correct that oversight. Based on the meter, it looks like rap to me and is something I normally avoid like the plague. Nice to see an example that does not denigrate women and applaud violence.

Thanks, Lou,

Thanks Lou. Now he was a guy who believed in the power of love. :)

This is not the most literary song in the world, but man Stevie Wonder nails the concept (and you can dance to it!).

Seasons of Love
Stevie Wonder

five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
five hundred twenty five thousand moments so dear
five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
how do you measure? measure a year

in daylights,
in sunsets,
in midnights,
in cups of coffee,
in inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife

in five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
how do you measure a year in a life?

how about love?
how about love?
how about love?
measure in love
seasons of love
seasons of love

five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
five hundred twenty five thousand journeys to plan
five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes
how do you measure a life of a woman or a man

in truths that she learned
or in times that she cried
in bridges he burned
or the way that she died

its time now to sing out
though the story never ends
let's celebrate remember a year
in a life of friends

remember the love
oh you gotta remember the love

remember the love
oh yeah, its a gift from up above

remember the love
sing out, give out, measure your life
in love

seasons of love
seasons of love

I've known French in France, Pakistanis in Pakistan, Austrians in Austria, Brits in the UK (also Poles, Ukranians, Germans - and yet more Pakistanis) - plus, I suspect, several other nationalities that I didn't recognise or have forgotten.  In every group there were a few that were pillocks, some that were really ace, but most were 'just folks' - even in the armed and police forces!

The bell-curve applies to all groups - and although there are undeniable cultural differences, they are small compared with the wide range of personalities.

So I have personal experience that confirms your position, Lou.

The problem is that the bell-curve has it's tails.  Any large group has its potential nobel laureates and its trash (though the latter seem more commonly created by ignorance - leading to prejudice - than the condition being inate).

Folks is folks, no matter what their skin colour or religion.

good call!

All you need is love - however bad a mood I'm in, this can make me feel better...

Love, Love, Love.
Love, Love, Love.
Love, Love, Love.

There's nothing you can do that can't be done.
Nothing you can sing that can't be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game.
It's easy.

Nothing you can make that can't be made.
No one you can save that can't be saved.
Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be you in time.
It's easy.

Chorus:
All you need is love.
All you need is love.
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need.

Chorus

Nothing you can know that isn't known.
Nothing you can see that isn't shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be.
It's easy.

Chorus

All you need is love (Paul: All together, now!)
All you need is love. (Everybody!)
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need (love is all you need).

Yee-hai!
Oh yeah!
She loves you, yeah yeah yeah.
She loves you, yeah yeah yeah.
