I was sent this in an e-mail and after checking it out, decided that it was important enough to put here.

We just had two twelve year olds in the Portland, OR area that OD'ed on Coricidin-D and are both lucky they didn't die. Common term for those on the street is 'Skittles'...learned that from the next door neighbor (high school age).

People just don't realize how dangerous some of these over the counter drugs can be until, sadly, it affects someone close to them. They need to be better informed about them and what they can do to you.

They actually made this claim about PPL a few years ago. I remember going thru my medicine cabinets at the time and tossing all the meds that contained that ingredient.

It means my kids are a bit more uncomfortable, but I know that they are safe. I already have one who had seizures everytime he gets sick. I don't need to add to his risk.

I'm a firm believer in Tylenol and Vicks Vapo-rub!

I'm a firm believer in using the least you have to. These meds DON'T cure the cold, they just mask it til your over it. An ibuprofin and a box of kleenix will work just as well. We take too many risks just to feel more comfortable.

I felt it was important. My mother had suffered a stroke and seeing the strong, active woman she was go over night to someone that could barely talk and had no emotional control, unable to walk, it was one of the hardest things I've ever had to see. If this little bit of information keeps even one person from going through that then it worth it.

Thanx for the info

As a father of 2 pre-teens who seem to contract colds on a regular basis, information like this is very valuable to me. Thanx for posting the info. I'm passing it along to all the parents I know as well.

There are meds out there that DON'T contain this chemical. Problem is, how do we know if they don't have something else even worse in them. All we can do is try our best to be as careful as we can. Try to always give the least amount of meds that you can get by with. Don't give them things that treat problems they don't have along with the ones they do.

Ok folks, after further checking by some people I trust, this link was found. It states that most of these meds no longer contain this chemical and are fairly safe. I'm sorry if I upset anyone but it's better safe then sorry. You can check out the link and see if you think it's safe for yourself.

""There is some truth to this, however it is not so large a risk that everyone should be spammed with a very alarmist alert such as this.

The recall mentioned in the warning was sent out to drug companies in October 2000. It is not valid now. If you take the warning at face value it attempts to convince you that it is the "current" situation, which is not true.

See: http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/ppa/default.htm for more detailed information. "
