I got this e-mail at work today and wanted to share it with you all. Scary shit.

All drugs containing PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE are being recalled. You may want to try calling the 800 number listed on most drug boxes and inquire about a REFUND. Please read this CAREFULLY.
STOP TAKING anything containing this ingredient. It has been linked to increased hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in brain) among women ages

They are asking you to call them at 800-548-3708 with the lot number

with small children, PLEASE PASS THIS ON. Please take time to check the following: URL: Phenylpropanolamine Information Page http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/infopage/ppa/default.htm

But not Alka Seltzer-XS, right? cuz that shit is THE BOMB for a fuckin hangover, I tells ya.

its a true one but I think its a old one, unless they fucked up again.

This is an old one.. it's already been taken care of.

If I remember correctly they stopped putting PHENYLPROPANOLAMINE into those products.

IT is old and has been taken care of.

They pulled the stuff from the shelves about a year or two ago.

According to snopes ( http://www.snopes.com/toxins/ppa.htm ) it's true... but the article there is dated late 2000.

I'm guessing that the stuff that's being pulled is being replaced with a PPA free drug and no one knows the difference. Or, it's like Dursban and they're letting them sell out instead of pulling them from the market.

I did read the other day that the 'recall' is a strong overstatement and that they're simply warning that small children not take the drugs.

PPA has had its uses in the past from an appetite supressant to decongestant....most brands of cold flu and allergy meds have had the ingredient removed. most have been replaced with pseudoephedrine....the active ingriedient in Sudafed. diet preps now adays are usually a mixture of herbs and may contain ephedra or the chineses herb Mua Hung.

How ligit is this?

Check the link.

I know they removed a lot of them, but for those who did not get this or still have some of these in their medicine cabinet, it's worth repeating.

I only knew of the Alka Seltzer during the last recall, which is why it sparked my interest.

I've heard bad things about Mua Hung, too. Arrythmia stuff.

Mua Huang (not sure on that spelling) is just a natural ephedra. It's speed just like any other and it causes heart problems. Why people are allowed to continue marketing either product is beyond me but it's legal and stupid people looking for a quick fix will keep buying it. All I can do is hope they talk to their doctors first.

Thanks for the information, I just passed it on to my e-mail list. Thanks again.

true enough mau hung in small doses or ephedra in small doses is generally not dangerous...it has been used for many centuries. the problem imho is overdoing a good thing. if one tablet is good two should be better and if that is the case why not three or four. that is usually what happens in many cases people literally overdose themselves over a period of time until they develop cardiac problems or vascular difficulties.

ephedrine does have legitimate medical uses, in many cases when given iv it can increase blood pressure nicely. but agian it is a theraputic dose. not the mega doses many people use!

mau hung or ephedrine should always be discontinued if used at least 2 weeks prior to any surgery, as it may interact with anesthetica agents;)
