so i wrote three stories. one i think is ok, one i think is pretty bad, one i like a lot. and the voting results are in complete opposite order from what i expected.

can someone please read my stuff and explain this all to me?

Trying to interpret how people are going to react to your stories is like trying to trying to teach a dolphin to roller skate . . . infuriating and futile. People have a funny way of deciding what's "good." Just write your best and write what YOU want, and don't try and interpret the voting trends. :D

It's kind of funny, actually. What I consider my best story is rated #44 in its category. What I consider my weakest is #3.

Take a look at the "Loving Wives or Unholy Whores" thread, and you'll see that we all have trouble figuring out what goes on when people read our smut.

We KNOW what people do when they READ our smut . . . we just don't want to think about it. :D

I do! :D

That's why I started up that "Do You Wank...?" thread a couple of weeks ago. :p

Mysterywhiteboy, as others have said, it's almost an impossible to task even begin to understand why some stories - written by the same person - acheive much higher voting scores than others. The favourite of my own, for example, doesn't have nearly as high a score as another which I thought wasn't nearly as good.

LOL!

I may be in the minority around here - I love thinking about what people do when they read my smut. To me, feedback from a stroker like, "that was really HOT" is just as good as feedback on my writing. You mean my dirtly little mind made you cum? Wooohooo!!!

All I ask is that the reader doesn't fall asleep while reading my submission. LOL!

When, of course, all of your deserve a jointly-held #1.

Oh, me too! I wonder what kind of vibe I'd get if they all did it at the same time? Would I, like, fall over in the grocery store awash with feelings of intense ... something?

careful what you wish for...those stories get THOUSANDS of views!

Why does one story do well and another do poorly, and why not according to expectations?

The answer comes from "Shakespeare In Love"

"I don't know. It's a mystery!"

Also, you need a performing dog in it. That, or pregnancy.

I guess it's the Britney Spears story you think is weak, huh? Because that's the one with the 'H' by it.

There are some categories that are just more popular than others. Incest is one, I think Celebrities is another. I haven't read yours, but most Celebrity stories I've seen are pretty poor, entry-level erotica, so a little quality goes a long way.

But listen: never mistake story rankings with story quality. It's nice to get good votes, but as far as I know there's simply no correlation.

Say! THERE's an idea! INCEST.
"

Hey, hey, there is some quality stuff in the Incest Catagory! We aren't all...umm...I mean to say, writers in that catagory aren't all vote-sluts. ;)

Luck,

True. The best way to judge the quality of your work (besides your own confidence and opinion) is to get the specific opinions of certain people that you know have a clue. Might be good to watch the public comments board and see if anyone whose writing you're familiar with surfaces. If you see a response from someone who can't spell for shit, it might be best not to take it as seriously as from someone you see consistently here on the AH board.
Just a thought.

Same reviews

What I find humorous is when one story is praised by one reader and totally trashed by another. It helps me to remember that all we can do is write what we like and hope others will like it too.

Agreed. One of the things I enjoyed about participating in the SDC was seeing just how radically different peoples' opinions of the same works could be. These were all people who wanted to help the work improve; one assumes that they were honestly giving their opinions and advice on how to make the stories better. It truly amazed me how very differently the same story could be read by different reviewers.
