Pixar

WALL*E is wonderful, and another one I should see again. I think I liked the first half or so better (the on-earth stuff), but all around it was fun.

The movie that made me cry (really, just the one) was Whale Rider.

Babe is a great movie, too.

We have a collection of movies from Studio Ghibli, the Japanese studio that has put out Miyazaki's movies (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro and more). There is a movie in there called Grave of the Fireflies which I cannot bring myself to watch. (Ebert has listed it as one of his Great Movies.) It's about a boy trying to survive with his little sister in WWII Japan.

I love Studio Ghibli as well. I think I have the entire collection :)

Grave of the Fireflies is a true "Tragedy", but so well told, and made. Its worth watching at least once.

I will probably try to watch it. I know it's animated, but I've read it's based on a true story, and I hate watching "kids in danger" stories. (Not so fond of reading them, either. No reflection on the writers/authors/directors, it's just me.) Knowing it's true would just make it worse.

I don't have the entire collection -- it doesn't include Ponyo, for example, but I think it pre-dates that one -- but it has something like eight Miyazaki films and the others are also fun.

I saw that ages ago and recall enjoying it, but it didn't stick with me the way many do. I wonder what I'd think if I saw it now.

It was pretty bad. I loved it as a kid (I watched it when I was sick at home with chicken pox, musta seen it six or seven times) but I saw it for nostalgia purposes recently, and the main characters are annoying.

That said, Batty is funny enough. And Tim Curry as a blob of toxic waste? You can just tell how much fun he's having in a recording booth somewhere, and he's a joy to watch.

"Be patient" is the banner catchphrase of straight/white/male entitlement, dude.

Actually, it's the catchphrase of Yoda or the Dalai Lama or Guru Mystics or Music Teachers.

Why the fuck do I have to wait patiently for some entitled str8 white man to give me the equality that is my RIGHT and which he has always enjoyed?

1. Give you? Serously. This is America, go work for it, and vote for people to represent your interests. You are in charge of the quality of your own life. It is no one else's job to make you feel happy. Your feeling are not mentioned in the Constitution. Don't worry, mine aren't either.

What more could you need?

You can believe in any form of a god or gods.
You can make as much money as you want.
You can go anywhere you want.
You can buy anything you want.
You can live anywhere you want.
You can fuck anyone you want. (short of age laws and animal abuse)
You can go to any doctor you want.
You can choose to vote for anyone you want.
You are entitled to a fair criminal trial.

I don't understand how much more equality a person needs.
I think your problem is that people discriminate upon your belief and/or your personality and/or the type of person you are.

They have as much right to be an asshole to you as you do to them, because in their opinion, you are being as asshole, otherwise they would leave you alone.

2. I don't know if you've been a straight white male for the last thirty years, but I have, and I can promise you that it's not easy, and we do not enjoy equality or a position of entitled power.

Rich people do.

Don't blame rich people because they have more money than you and didn't have to do anything to get it. You have the right to earn as much money as they have, and then you can leave that money to any person or persons you want.

It's just money, it's not like it's some kind of mystery. I mean, all you have to do is work, and then people will hand it to you.

"Be patient" is nothing less than code speak for "When we damn well feel like giving it to you!" (which is usually never BTW, until we drag your asses into court and demand it!).

Be patient is nothing more than code speak for: "Things take time when 300 million+ people and 3.79 million square miles are involved, unless the majority agrees."

Federal Law trumps State Law. If the Supreme Court says so, then it is so. Winning in a Circuit Court or a State Supreme Court means nothing unless the Supreme Court decides not to hear the case. All lower courts merely set precedent or uphold the rule of law in the stead of higher courts.

So 'dragging your asses to court' for inequality means that someone was violating a federal or state law in the first place, and they would have ended up in court anyway.

All you are doing is rushing the process by tattling, and trying to make your opinions precedent instead of the natural course that society would take.

You can't force the popular kids to like you, trying that is only going to make the situation worse.

So, be patient. Democracy takes time.

Here's some perspective:
It took 116 days for the representives of 13 colonies, working on a constant basis, to write the Constituition. It took 8 years for those colonies to ratify it as law and declare themselves states of America. There were only around 3 million people in the country at that time, including slaves and excluding American Indians.

BTW, Ferngully is great, and a very good metaphor without being preachy. It's almost as good as the first The Land Before Time.

As far as Wall-E, try watching it on mute and play the soundtrack of your choice, it syncs up with damn near everything and ends up being a full album music video, though I would suggest something melodic.

Was anyone else a little let down by Arrietty? Don't get me wrong, it looked beautiful, had an awesome sense of scale and often sounded great too, but where was the plot? Or the villain that actually had motivations?

Oh, and thanks for making me think of Grave of the Fireflies again; it's been ages since I've seen that one. Next time I'm feeling too good about my life, I'll have to pop it into my player :D
