Can you attach pics that you make up with AI to your story of characters in your story?

I never know when to be helpful and when I’m being trolled. Let’s go with benefit of the doubt…

If you include photos or any other images in your story, it becomes an Illustrated Story. At present, no AI images are allowed in Illustrated Stories. Also, any image you include needs to be either your own work, or you need to have evidence that the copyright holder approves of your usage.

TL-DNR no you can’t.

But you can always set up another web page to showcase your illustrations. Like I have with Xitter.

Thank you for your answers. I usually have an idea of what my characters look like in my mind but suck at art. But can at least get close to what I'm thinking about when I generate something with AI. Also wouldn't mind if someone that is good with art wanted to illustrate some pics to go along with my stories.

Some advice. The chances of finding an artist who is willing to share your vision, as opposed to focusing on their own is low.

My friend @djrip has done some beautiful line drawings as cover art for my stories. E.g.

But finding someone as nice as him willing to help is rare.

Just to set your expectations.

Wait, is that noted someplace? I understand and definitely agree with not allowing AI-generated stories, but artwork? What if someone wants to use AI to create series artwork for their stories? Or heaven forbid, using AI to create avatar images.
This is how I see it.

As a writer, I would find it a shame if someone AI generated a story which did really well. It would be a punch in the face, since us writers put in so much work.

So for artists it would be the same. If AI generated art started doing really well in the illustrations category, I think it'd be an insult to the hard work and skill that human artists put into their illustrations.

Writing and art are just two different mediums. So they should be treated the same IMHO.

It's in the publishing guidelines and the content guidelines. Aside from the points already mentioned here, the site only publishes content that the user has a copyright for, and therefore can grant the site permission to use it in the ways outlined. Prompting an AI to amalgamate a bunch of art which neither it nor its programmers own copyrights to does not generate a result that can itself be copyrighted, ergo, the site doesn't want it. Avatars are a different color of horse, though. A number of people have used AI for that.

So then I'm curious, should our posts be considered content as well, and if so, are our posts copyrighted?

I'm not trying to stir the pot here, I'm just surprised about the AI artwork issue.
Yes, our comments are technically our intellectual property.

People think copyright is more complicated than it is. It gets more complex when you try to enforce things or gain official recognition but the baseline is this:

If you make something, it is your copyright.

It’s definitely not allowed.

No.

The site doesn't allow AI generated art.
I don't believe this is entirely true.

AI-generated illustrations have been used for cover art in the series manager by many authors.

I don't know if this is an exception to the AI policy or an exclusion from it.

I need to follow up with Laurel on a question I posed to her weeks ago about what the site's policy was on AI-generated speech.

In Midler v. Ford Motor Company, it was ruled that a voice cannot be copyrighted. A recording of a voice may be copyrighted, but not the voice itself.

Does that open up the use of AI-generated voices to free-use for audio books, etc.?

I think that's like avatars, too small to worry about. The AI exclusion certainly applies to stories, art submissions and the Artists' Corner (where the moderator polices it stringently).
