Pick up trucks!

This pretty much summarises utes in OZ

http://wn.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ute_(vehicle)

You can buy a Holden(GM) ute straight from the showroom with a 5.9 litre V8 which, unmodified, will reach just short of 170mph.

Ferals (Rednecks) like to buy them and customise them - big bullbars, bigger sound systems etc.

My ute is to go camping in. I have a fabric canopy on it that goes up (and down for traveling). It takes about 2 minutes to erect and 2 minutes to put down again. As the cheapest fabric is curtains from op shops it's made of that. To water proof it I put it in a solution of silicone and vinegar. It's waterproof, and with the silicone, stronger. It looks lovely when it's up with the florals displayed. Total cost was less than $50, mostly for the zip and silicone.

I saw a camper trailer today- second hand they wanted $8,500 for it and it isn't near as pretty as mine. I've traveled a long way with it and saved so much money on accommodation. The canopy is on top of a wooden platform, under which there is space for storage.

I love it.

Thank you ever so much, colddiesel. I now know more about OZ [and NZed] utes than I ever really wanted to know. ;) [A common problem between me and wikipedia.]

They're not. Ute's cargo areas are fully enclosed, pickups aren't. I drive a Ford Explorer Sport Trac which is a hybrid between a ute and a pickup.

But what about where "pick up truck" isn't in the vernacular at all? Utes don't necessarily have enclosed cargo areas. Its a difficult distinction because a canopy can be put on a ute. That encloses the cargo area. Was it a pick up truck before?
