I'm sorry if this is a stupid question - I really have done my best to find the answer in the FAQs but had no success. If there is a thread that covers this just point me in the right direction!

I'm trying to attach some photos in my new thread but I've had to reduce them to such a small size & poor quality that I almost feel it's not worth them being there. I thought I'd sorted it by just resizing them but thye still have too many kb's.

So my how to question is please could someone give me idiot step by step instructions on how to upload my photos so they look better than this.. http://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?t=825435 I have MS Office if that's any help??

If it's not possible could someone tell me if there's a hosting site I can use where I can make my pictures private - although I've cropped my face out & haven't taken any pictures that violate Forum rules - I still don't want them floating around on photobucket!

Many thanks & big smoochy kisses

You need to crop them to ideal proportion, resize to ideal size, then export the image from your image handling program. Exporting strips all of the meta-data off that bloats a file size. This should get you well within the upload constraints. Your only other option is to host on an outside site and link them here.

Can you translate that to English? ;)

There used to be a thread where you could post them and some angellic Litster would re-size it for you....I'll have to go look for that now!

I love you for saying that! Instructions for dummies please NM??

Ah geez, I tried to use small words and everything!;):D

The photo editor that you use it should have a cropping tool. This is to cut the physical size of the image down to only the relevant content, for instance, we want to see a picture of your buxom self, not the entire room that you are standing in, so you trim off the edges of the photo so that YOU are the focal point.

Your photo editor should also have a feature that allows you to resize the image. Let's say your image is 1000x3000 pixels, the site limit is 300x600, you simply put in the size you want the image to be.

The difference between cropping and resizing is cropping "cuts" portions of the image away, resizing merely changed it's dimensions.

When all that is said and done, either in your "file" or "tool" menu should be the option to "export" an image. You click on this option and the photo editor will strip all the superfluous data off the image, like how many times it's been edited, the camera it was taken with, etc. None of this data (aka meta data ) is relevant, it only bloats the file size of the image you're trying to post.

Is that a little more clear?

I use a free program called Irfanview. Very user friendly.
I second the recommendation of Irfanview. It is free, versatile, and most importantly, designed specifically to solve the kind of problems you're having. Ifanview has a batch conversion mode that will take an entire directory of your images and convert them to a standard pixel size and compression ratio to meet the limits Lit has set for the attachment function.

www.picresize.com/

There are loads of other resizing tools out there as well. However, I would recommend using photobucket or something similar, that way you could directly link them into threads, if you so choose.

Gimp is a free photo editing software, similar to photoshop that has this option I believe. Does that make sense?

OK -

NM - thanks for that - I'd got the hang of cropping & resizing but I think the exporting bit is where I was falling down!

ima & weird - I'll check that out, thanks

Pmann - can you make photobucket private?

Thank you all for taking the time to help - Litsers are such lovely people!

Yes, you can change photobucket's privacy settings to private.

Merci!

Think I've made it a bit better! Just impressed hubby by saying 'I've stripped the meta data from my photos' - like I had any idea what I was talking about!

you are welcome.

Not all photo programs have exporting abilities, though they may have a similar tool that does a similar thing. I use Adobe Fireworks and it has the export feature that can be used on a single image or an entire folder of images.

The thing is with any photo manipulation, you ALWAYS want to save your original, untouched image in a separate folder, that way if you screw up or want to do something different down the road, you've still got the original to work from.

I had to chuckle at your comment to hubby! LOL To be honest, I sound way more tech savvy than I really am.
