Twice in the past week I've seen moderators on other internet boards lecturing people for asking questions or posting in old threads (several years old). They claim its "against internet etiquette." First off, there is no real "etiquette" on the internet, its silly to make such a claim.

Secondly, why would anyone consider it bad to "revive" an old thread? I don't even understand the objection. I consider it a good thing to do this.

Of course there is ettiquitte on the internet. Just because you're an asshole and can't understand these things doesn't change that fact.

Bumping old threads is always considered rude. They're dead for a reason. Are you really this stupid or do you fake it for Lit?

On the flip side, you can be chastised for starting a new thread where there were other older threads already in existence that cover that topic.

So when to continue an old thread or start a new one?

Bumping an old thread may always be considered rude, but it depends on the reason IMO.
If you're bumping it to say "Nice job", "x2" or editorial comment, then yeah, bad etiquette.

If you're bumping it to ask a relevant question, or correct misinformation that was posted (I'm thinking here about things like technical forums) that could cause problems for someone, then there's nothing wrong with it. Or if you're bumping it to provide a relevant update on something. At least those are the "rules" I go by.
When I'm chastised for bumping an old thread for one of these reasons I just ignore the comment.

On internet forums where moderators maintain so type of etiquette, similar threads can be merged and threads can be split when the discussion goes in different directions.

On the GB, there are no mods, so a person who starts a thread about a news event gets to taunt anyone who makes a later thread about the same thing. This accrues GB points which maybe exchanged for imaginary penis length. This can be very useful at times.

Most people have their rackets and grab any excuse to play I'M OKAY, BUT YOURE NOT OKAY. Around here the favorite game is STFU AND SNIFF THE ASS OF THE LEAD DOG.

I've really only noticed the people complaining of bumping old threads over in the "writer's forums"

But they're a little pretentious over there anyway.

Did you ask "may this O/one enter" BDSM is so fucked up.

No, there's nothing wrong with bumping "old" threads. That's the whole point of the internet, nothing is ever "dead" on it. That's one of the few good things about it. Its rude to lock an old thread and NOT let people post in it if they want to.

I enjoy reading bumped "old" threads. I salute those who bump them.
