Pet peeves

Funny, one of my pic-related posting peeves was quite the opposite. I disliked being told via PM that I was too old to be doing this, as if it's somehow news to me that women younger than myself are hotter. I guess it was meant kindly, to save me from embarrassment, but even so, it did seem gratuitously harsh. Why not just shake one's head at the vain folly of an old chick? Why PM her?

That sounds like an incredibly rude thing to do, regardless of what the intentions were.

It wasn't me!

No, if you thought someone was making a fool of themselves, you'd just laugh at them from the safety of your own home, not try to "warn" them via PM that you thought they should spare everyone the sight of their saggy, aging body.

You're mean, but you don't waste your time. I can respect that.

Someone who sends you a PM and then sends you another one 5 minutes later bugging you to answer the first PM.

people who start more than one thread for their pics ... why cant they post them all in one thread

The world may never know

Internet enhanced punctuation

What is with the alternate uses of hyphens, underscores and asterisks? When you write out a quotation, it's supposed to be surround with quotation marks ("). Not _like this_ or *like this.* Those aren't what those characters are used for, so stop pretending they have some kind of meaning when you use them incorrectly. You know what *this* means? Nothing.

I take that back. It does mean you don't know what you're typing.

You want to emphasize something? Use italics. You want to bring attention to a specific word? Use bold. Underlines are rarely used anymore - they were popular before desktop publishing made the use of alternate typefaces easy so now we can use bold and italics when appropriate. (Don't you dare say that using bold and italics is hard to do. Just double-click the word or words to highlight them, then click the B or the I button at the top of the Reply window. Done.)

There are detailed rules for the use of italics, bold, and quotation marks, but for the purposes of everyday use, what I've stated above is fine. Just please stop using the asterisks and underscores.

Read this thread to see some of my favorite posts. Notice the total lack of punctuation in some of them.

some of the sentences run on and don't seem to come to an end i don't know how people read this stuff wouldn't it be easier to add a few commas so people would know what the fuck you're saying

Are people retarded? Is this site — a site that uses as a foundation for its name the word literature — a haven for high school drop-outs? Learn to use the English language you fucking morons!

Ok another pet peeve...kind of two in one...
ungrateful children....

See, this type of thing bothers me because it sort of strikes me as arrogant. It's like, "I don't have to use proper grammar/punctuation. You can take the extra minute to decipher what I meant!"

We have these rules for a reason. If you want other people to understand what exactly it is that you are attempting to communicate, you have to use them.

I realize some people will argue that it's arrogant for me to be such a stickler about stuff like this, but the truth is that when you're in a forum like this in which the only thing you have to go on is the way people present themselves in their posts, well, repeated poor grammar/spelling/punctuation can really be a deal breaker--at least for me. I find that if someone is attempting to build a rapport with me via multiple posts in my thread and PMs I will have far more respect and appreciation for a person who can type out a coherent sentence. And in my experience, these people are few and far between.

Honestly, English is not that hard a language to figure out. We don't have all that masculine/feminine stuff they have in French and German. We don't have all those required different vocal intonations they have in Mandarin. Quite frankly, it makes you look stupid if you don't know the difference between basics like your and you're or there, their, and they're. Maybe you aren't stupid at all. Maybe you've been spending all your time proving theories in quantum physics to bother with this stuff. Fine. Take a break, make some coffee and spend five minutes to read my link in post #38 below.

That is all. [/rant]

Great,
now please do not forget that this is a public Forum, not your own, and EVERYBODY here can and is allowed to make as many grammar/punctual/spelling mistakes as they like to. Making a spelling error seems to be as rude to you as rude it appears to be to the rest of the posters on here for being judged and publicly ridiculed based upon their language expressivity. That smells like a borderline hypocricity to me! Don`t like a poster`s style of writing- ignore them. Simple as that.
English is not my native language and I`d hate, tigh and mighty, to be judged for every spelling error i might make whilst trying to communicate with people. Heck, what communication do you expect after all...people here just want to see your bare ass, and that`s what you do.

Fine, make as many mistakes as you like, it's not like I can stop you. But the truth is that there are certain grammatical rules we all have to adhere to in any language in order to communicate effectively. That's what language is. It's a shared system of communication with predetermined parameters. Two people who speak the same language understand each other because they both understand these predetermined criteria. Someone who uses the incorrect word or spelling or punctuation runs the risk of being misinterpreted and then the whole language system breaks down.

I'm not going to be so rude as to point out to an individual that such-as-such was misspelled or punctuated incorrectly in his or her post. But, if you happen to be someone who wants to build some sort of personal cyber relationship with me, and you take the initiative to send me several PMs, then please take the time to type coherently in your PMs. Why should I have to spend the extra time to try and figure out what someone else is trying to say because they don't adhere to the basic rules of written English communication? Most of the time I do understand what the individual is attempting to communicate but I honestly have received more than a few PMs which have confused me beyond reason.

Personally, I think just ignoring a PM without explanation from someone whose writing "style" (as you put it) I don't like is far ruder than requesting that the PM is readable in the first place.

Edit: And I'm not saying my English is perfect. Far from it in fact. But I take the time to try and use correct punctuation/grammar/spelling and I proofread my posts both out of courtesy to the people who will be reading them and because I want what I'm trying to say to be understood by others as well as possible.

Yeah, that's the typical response: "This is a free country and we are all allowed to be as dumb as we want." I'm not saying you are dumb. If English isn't your first language, fine. I can see from this post that you're doing better than half the people who claim English as their only language.

The problem is when people are trying to express in writing the things they are thinking. When people write the word "aloud" in place of "allowed," this isn't the same word. When you say, "I think we're aloud to do that," it sounds right, because, phonetically, it is right. When you type it out, however, it's not the same thing. Now that same sentence is: "I think we're audibly to do that." Huh?!?

Do you think that a prospective employer would be so gracious as to think, "Well, I kinda understand what he's trying to say. I'll give him the job over these other people who know how to communicate effectively"? When you write your mother a birthday card, does she read it with tears in her eyes and think of how nice it is to have a son/daughter who can't spell? Do you think that your friends and coworkers read your letters and think, "Wow, Jim sure is a brilliant guy, even if he can't write to save his ass"? You know what they're all thinking? "How did you get this far in life without knowing the difference between 'I like your eyes' and 'I like you are eyes?'"

I love you.

You are so pathetic. lol.

This is a horny crowd we are talking about. Not a job interview. Or mother`s day. These same grammatically incorrect poor creatures, which disgusts you so much, had much more dignity then you for not judging your photos, for example. If they don`t like you - they simply don`t post on your thread. Just move on, nobody`s perfect. And so you are.

Why am I pathetic for wanting to understand what someone is trying to communicate to me? That doesn't make any sense.

It's that damned holiday spirit. It'll wear off eventually.

You do realize this is the "Pet peeves" thread, don't you? I mentioned that spelling errors, grammatical goofs, and lack of proper punctuation were one of my pet peeves, and Lorali — much to her credit — agreed with me. We are posting entirely in the spirit of this thread.

We are talking about people who do post on other people's threads and when they do they use such astoundingly bad communicative skills that it's sometimes hard to understand what they're trying to say. Sometimes it's impossible.

I don't usually go onto other people's threads just to tell them how bad they are at writing. I do expect that someone who posts on a thread of mine, or who makes comments directed at me on another thread learn to do it in a way that I can easily understand. I don't expect them to do this as a courtesy to me; I expect them to do this out of respect for the English language.

On a side note, most of the people I know who use English as a second language do appreciate learning more about the language and its usage. I'd like to give you a pointer about something you're doing wrong:

When you're using an apostrophe in a word, you seem to be using the "grave accent" (`) instead. The apostrophe(') is located on American keyboards next to the carriage return and it shares a key with the double quote mark ("). The symbol you're using adds extra space between the letters and makes the words look strange. Don't do it anymore.

Hahahahaha. I think some of my cereal milk just came out of my nose.

Interesting that you immediately thought I was referring to you. I didn't mention you or even link to the post where you made this error.

It's not all about you, dear.

All I can do is laugh at this thread now!!!

The last couple of post are just hilarious to say the least ...

Oh and Ekserb, your body is stunning
