Pet peeves

What about the people that truly had/have a learning disability? The ones that did the best they could given their circumstances?
Are they now not aloud to converse on a bulletin board because they have grammar issues?

If the number of poorly written posts on this forum were an accurate indication of the percentage of the population that is learning disabled, the "special" schools would outnumber all others.

The typical reply when someone calls attention to a typo or misspelling isn't, "Sorry, I'm learning disabled." It's, "Fuck you. It doesn't matter, anyhow. No one cares."

Does that sound like the response a person with a disability would give?

aloud - adverb - audibly; not silently or in a whisper : he read the letter aloud.

allow (allowed) - verb (trans.) - permit (someone) to enter a place or go in a particular direction : the river was patrolled and few people were allowed across.

I know they sound the same, but they're not the same word.

Must be that learning disability.

Here's one, I just recently ordered a new butt plug in size "medium." It arrives, I open the box and it's fucking huge! I go back to the site and find out that I ordered the "medium" of three sizes, the other two being "small" and "petite."

I know it's my fault for not reading the product descriptions carefully, but still.

So that's your answer to people that have a learning disability?
When people look up the definition of "asshole" in the dictionary, I'm sure they will find your picture.

Further demonstrating your lack of familiarity with a dictionary.

"This is my first picture post. Please be kind. :)" The next day they post something like, "Oh, my! You are such a welcoming group. I'm so glad I decided to share my pictures with you. I used to be self conscious, but now that you think I'm hot, I'll keep posting!"

Well, what did you think was going to happen? You asked everyone to be kind and they did. Congratulations, you have a group of mindless drones at your beck and call.
Truer words were never spoken.

I get annoyed by people who butt in while you're in the middle of a conversation with someone or in the middle of a transaction with a cashier, teller, whoever. Oh please, don't mind us...go ahead...because what you have to say is obviously way more important than what we were discussing/doing. Some people really do deserve to be tied to a chair and beaten with their own shoes

Speaking as an English teacher . . .

People who don't know the difference between your and you're. Or their, they're, and there. Or to and too. Or who just use the wrong damn word altogether.

While this is a peeve, personally, it is a minor one (and less worrisome online where no one proofreads, everyone types fast, typos happen, and there are many people typing in languages other than their native one/two/three).

What's more important to me are the people who can't construct a coherent sentence in their native language. Which the quoted post is a good example of - sentence fragments all over the place.

New Peeve

People who think English teachers are grammar police.

That's not our job.

At least it's not the job of those of us who teach beyond the middle school level. Our job is infinitely greater than that. Amongst the most important of our duties are:

1) Preservation of the English-speaking literary tradition
1a) Preserving knowledge of earlier forms of English, including Middle and Old, so that texts like Beowulf and the Arthurian Romances are not lost to time.
2) Opening up potential interpretations of literary works from Beowulf and Marlowe to Thomas Hardy (*shudder*) to Tolkien and Rowling through a variety of means from trauma theory and Jungian archetypal analysis to Historicism and Marxism - with an ungodly amount of other stuff in between.
3) Fostering a love of reading and the written word in future generations.

Or at least that's my interpretation of my job. This is a major debate within the field right now, at least in some geographic/academic locations.

-Van

P.S. Composition instructors (my current job) are the grammar police. And, yes, there is a difference between Composition and English.

I'm finding this Donald Trump and Rosie O'Donnell feud pretty annoying. What the hell are they even fighting about? They're just spewing insults at each other.

There's a feud between The Donald and Rosie O'Donnell?

Being a newbie even if I used to come here all the time but after a few years things and people change.
Being lumped in with all the pervs on here Wait thats not right I am a perv just not one who will pm you wanting you to just start talking dirty.. :)

People who chew with their mouths open....the sound of it...ugh!

I have to say, my grammar has become worse since IMing and posting on a board. I notice myself making mistakes such as "right" for "write" or the wrong, "to/too/two." I know the correct form, but I have noticed these type of mistakes when I go back to a thread...

now why would someone do that to someone as sexy as you?

hmmmmm I dunno, guess I'm giving my phone number out to the wrong people

LOL

I know this is a pet peeve thread but I just have to say how much it pisses me off to have people come on the internet and "pretend" to like someone and lead them on knowing all along that there will never be nothing between that other person and themselves ... telling them all the things they want to hear, making them believe that it was only them they want to be with and all that other fuckin bullshit ... is this a new game that I am not aware of?

ok not sure if this has been covered here or not so giving it a shot!

If it has i'll appologize and let it die out...

Mine: taking the time to post something nice to a persons thread and they dont give you the courtesy of a response...now i know the occasional multi response is neccessary, however not to acknowledge a post is rude!

Ok everyone let them rip

Personally, I think of every single post in my thread as a compliment, after all people could peek in and move on, no? The fact that they will take the time to stop and leave me a message, I find gratifying. Individual replies to each and every one is the least I can do to return the pleasure.

What really rubs me the wrong way is the 'hit and run' posts. Those who post only to make an appearance... "Hi baby, you are as sexy as ever, love ya!"... and never bother to find out whether said Baby is having a good day, a mediocre or a shitty one.
I post in about a dozen threads daily and I always READ before I post.
