Folks--

It has been both inspiring and encouraging to hear about so many folks returning to college. KillerMuffin asked what was our excuse for not going. Mine are time and money, money being the biggest factor. Loans are not an option. I owe a substantial amount now, and I'm no longer eligible.

I am searching for grants. The links are infinite, but narrowing the selections seem impossible. I'm trying and getting nowhere fast. Any tips or recommendations would be appreciated.

I have the desire and skills. I'd like to be able to go back full-time. I have about a year to finish. Interested in persuing a Master's after that in either Education or Library Science. I'm the sole provider in my household so you can see the bind I'm in.

Appreciate you taking the time to read and respond.

Peace,

daughter

Daughter,
Here is a list of urls that were given to me a few months back. I haven't gone through them, but maybe something can be of use. :)

Good luck, sister!

Thanks, raindancer

I did one search, got 33k hits! Tell me how to sort them. LOL

I know this is a process. I'm just hoping someone has learned a method that is effective. I'll add the url's to my list.

Peace,

daughter

No real advice on this one but alot of well wishes. Going back can be hard and trying to work out class schedules with work and a life is daunting by it self.

So I guess all I am saying is hold on....it is worth it and I really hope you can work it all out.

Nic,

ps...if I come across any good info I will let you know.

No advise but lots of well wishes. Student loans can keep you up at night. I know.

Speak directly to the people at the college you wish to attend. Often times, there are private grants available that you won't know about unless you ask. Many of them are geared toward single parents, non-traditional students, etc.

I'm involved in the same search, so if I find anything useful, I'll pass it on.

Just remember

That I have faith that you will find a way. I know how strong you are. You'll do it. :)

This I'm not making lite about

Too bad you don't have a football scholarship at one of the Florida schools...You'd make millions in the NFL even if you didn't belong in college

But my real heart iz with you

I have an AAS in my field and have given much pondering to going on for my BS. I would not be able (Or willing) to do it here, live, and in person. BUT.....there are 3 or 4 very respected distance programs in the US and I know a few who have gone on to their masters with them. (Of course, that is a l-o-n-g term goal.)
My suggestion to you--be sure to look around and see what offering in classes are available. In my field, we tend to be overworked so the programs are very accomodating for people who are not still living off mommy and daddy's dollars.

Some day... Some day I am going to go after my PHD. But first I think I am going to take another masters in school administration.

I'd almost rather be a principal than a teacher. Espeacially if I am going to stay in education.

I am going to be paying on my student loans for the rest of my life anyhow. I still have a lot left for graduate work that I can borrow...

daughter,

I think I remember you saying you lived in Georgia before. If so, and you're interested in education, look into the Hope Scholarships for Teachers. They cannot be used for graduate school, but if you don't have a BA yet, you can basically start over and Hope will pay for everything. I have a friend who looked into Master's programs but decided to do another BA when she found out Hope would pay all her costs. She's been working on it for two years now and this is the first quarter that she has had any day classes so she's been able to continue with her job.

daughter?

As you know, you can sort those 33k replies by adding more search parameters.

Try these:
women
your geographic area
single mother
continuing education
African-American
education
teaching
library science

Add anything into the search parameters that'll narrow it to *you* and *your* specific situation.

When you're following links, stay focused. We all know about following link after link after link, just to find ourselves down some path that's far from where we began... and we have no bread crumb trail to find our way back along. Bookmark any associated links that look interesting but stay on your main trail.

Good luck with this. It looks and feels overwhelming, i know. But *you* know that one need only take one small step at a time to really get going. It's the taking of that first step that's often so difficult, isn't it?

There are so many resources and funds available, but it can be difficult to obtain them. Sometimes educational funds are considered by income, but they lump it in a generalization and if you make a certain amount of money, you are not accepted.

You have your goals and what aspires you to be motivate to excel within and for others who depend on you. Although it might be a long journey, it will be a much enlightening experience to feed the mind as well as accomplish the very things in life that bring you happiness and satisfaction. I have been in school myself and struggle to complete my degree, which I could say equals my experience in the field. Yet, it's difficult to have the desired jobs these days due to the competition and the market. It's hard times and there is more talent than what is available. That's another or the most paramount of reason to pursue and complete my studies—it's a start to security and what I seek in an ideal career.

It seems to get harder as the years go by and the responsibilities and the need to keep up with living expenses. Yet, I will look into those sites posted above and strive to reach my goals.

daughter, You most definitely have my best wished and any help I can give you. I'm also starting back to school after a 14-year layoff.

I've only recently discovered for myself why I never followed through with the little college I did have. I was, at the time, working two jobs and going to school full-time. I dropped school in favor of work. The biggest thing at the time, and only recently realized, was that I didn't know why I was going. I didn't have a definite direction and was going because that was something I was "supposed" to do.

Now I have a direction. Better late than never. :)

Daughter,
Hey girl! How's the pursuit going?

I'm thinking of you. :)

Be most well!

My 100th post... Cool !

Check with the college about an guaduate assistantship...
I did this and they paid my tuition as well as a monthly stipend.
I was required to work so many hours per week for the department which was easy.
The first year I worked two hours a day in the scene shop and the second year I taught a course in Acting for the Non-Major.

Good luck to you... :)
