If you think the Bush tax cut plan is unfair, read this rebuttal that appeared in the Sunday, March 4 Chicago Tribune. By the way, the ratios are roughly accurate;
10% of the taxpayers pay about 60% of the taxes collected, 30% pay 37%, and 60% collectively pay only 4%.

Every night, 10 men met at a restaurant for dinner. At the end of the meal, the bill would arrive; they owed $100 for the food that they shared. Every night they lined up in the same order at the cash register to pay the bill.

The first four men paid nothing at all.
The fifth, grumbling about the unfairness of the situation, paid $1.
The sixth man, feeling a little put out, paid $3.
The next three men paid $7, $12 and $18, respectively.
The last man was required to pay the remaining balance, $59 he realized that he was paying for not only his own meal but the unpaid balance left by the first five men.

The 10 men were quite settled into their routine when the restaurant threw them into chaos by announcing that it was cutting its prices. Now dinner for the 10 men would only cost $80.
This clearly would not affect the first four men; they still ate for free.
The fifth man announced he would now pay nothing either.
The sixth man lowered his contribution by1/3,and paid only $2.
The seventh man deducted $2 from his usual payment and paid only $5.
The eighth man paid $9 instead of his usual $12.
The ninth man paid $12, $6 less than before.
This left the last man with a bill of $52.

Outside of the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings, and angry outbursts began to erupt.
The sixth man yelled: "I got only $1 out of the $20 in cost reduction, and he got $7," pointing at the last man.
The fifth man joined in: "Yeah! I only saved $1 too. It is unfair that he got seven times more than me."
The seventh man cried, "Why should he get a reduction of $7 when I only got $2?"

The nine men formed an outraged mob, surrounding the 10th man.
The first four men followed the lead of the others: "Even though we weren't paying anything in the first place, we didn't get any of the $20 reduction in cost; where is our share?"
The nine angry men then carried the10th man up to the top of a hill and lynched him.

The next night, the nine remaining men met at the restaurant for dinner.
But when the bill came, there was no one to pay it.

Go, W!

Sorry Cheyenne, this was the first time I had seen this. I don't mean to be redundant. I thought it was interesting. I didn't think this was particularly inflamatory. If anyone wants to jump all over it, they can have a ball. I'm staying out of the debates these days.

Actually, I have read some interesting posts from several people lately that indicate that I am not the only person who has become progressively disenchanted with the political debates. For those who enjoy them, I think that's wonderful.

Oh, no! I like it! I liked it the first time around! But I seem to remember a few battles with it, I think it was Thumper who argued the most. I miss him- damn school work taking up his time!

Political debates here always seem to get hot. Even Laurel can't stay away. Don't let them get to you though.

Hmm, too many conservatives on the board tonight. I think I need to balance things out. Let's see, now what can I do?

I know.

Republicans suck! But Democrats suck better! :D

hahahaha..... finally a political post from Pyper that I can smile at...

Wait..
Forty percent of American's don't pay taxes?

I've made political posts? Naw, I stay out of politics. That must have been my radical left wing alter ego, Comrade Pypersky, who gets on the computer late at night when I am sleeping. Yes, that's surely it.

And moderates suck twice as much. :D

I am sorry, What were you saying Texan?

:p

Boy, you've roused quite the heated political debate here, Texan. ;)

Out of those ten men, who's the best fed?
I pick the last man. He's lethargic from all the food he's ingested, which explains why he took so long to get to the cash register.

So did I give the correct answer, PC? And do I win anything if I did?

(Silly post, I know. But I'm only 14 away from reaching 900 posts. Maybe I can get there tonight!!)

It was more of a metaphoric reference to the fact that those who earn more should pay more as a percentage, but I was playing devil's advocate because I don't really believe that.

But yeah, you win. Now I just have to think up a prize.

That story's cute, but the inference that poor people are lazy & shiftless & out to get out of paying anything while the good, moral rich guy has to foot the bill is ludicrous.

Name me someone who makes over $200,000 who doesn't have an accountant to find him every loophole and shelter.

Name me someone who makes under $20,000 who can afford an accountant.

People want to give military pay raises. They want better schools. They want potholes filled in. But everyone bitches about taxes. Like they should have a right to use publicly funded things without paying any in. Shows a total lack of understanding of how the system works. Go build your own schools & roads & hire your own police force to protect yourself, if you're too damn greedy to chip in.

I hate whining about taxes. I got dinged hard this year, but that's life. I want a strong military. I want the cops in my neighborhood to have the right equipment. I want the roads to be repaired. I want the kids on my block to have current textbooks and good teachers. All this costs money. If my little bit can help make that happen, then I'm proud to contribute.

All I know is

I chewed you all out libs and cons alike for your apathy and now it seems we may be getting back into the swing of things.

Remember, I serve a purpose, and it is an off election year. Just 'cause Gray, and Hill, and Al, are campaigning doesn't mean we are going to go vote anytime real soon.

Passions cool.

They'll heat up again.

It'll be so cool.

The return of the A_J show!

Quite right, Siren!

He is nice to look upon, isn't he?

I happen to be one of those poor folk who don't pay anything. But I'm not sitting on my ass planning to stay that way! A college degree is in progress, so in three years, I'm OUTTA HERE! I say that with great glee because I hate being dependant on the "system." There is a young black Republican activist that I admire who said something like: Democrats want to make the poor comfortable in their poverty. Republicans want to encourage the poor out of their poverty so they won't be poor anymore. I tend to agree with that. I'm damn uncomfortable being "poor" so we're doing what it takes to get out of the situation. I say all this because I wanted those of you who are footing the bill for my husband's college degree to know that my family is truly grateful for your help, and my sons will have a better life because of it. Your tax dollars are not being wasted, at least not by one family. Soon I hope to be there with you again, paying my share! Sincerely
