Pentagon: Yes, North Korea Can Probably Nuke Us If They Want To…

Via Daily Beast:

North Korea likely has nuclear weapons that can be delivered by ballistic weapons, according to a classified report by the Defense Intelligence Agency. The assessment comes amid escalating rhetoric by Kim Jong-un threatening nuclear strikes on the United States. It’s the clearest statement yet that the boy leader poses a legitimate and imminent nuclear threat.

According to the report, “DIA assesses with moderate confidence the North currently has nuclear weapons capable of delivery by ballistic missiles however the reliability will be low.” That line was read aloud by Rep. Doug Lamborn, a Republican from Colorado, on Thursday during a House Armed Services Committee hearing. Lamborn was questioning Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, who seemed taken aback and declined to answer the question, saying, “I haven’t seen it and you said it’s not publicly released, so I choose not to comment on it.”

The conclusion from the DIA plays into a larger debate within the U.S. intelligence community about North Korea’s ability to launch a nuclear missile. While North Korea has conducted three underground nuclear tests since 2006, the U.S. has been divided for years on whether the country’s engineers can place a nuclear warhead atop a ballistic missile. The DIA report now shows that the military’s most important intelligence agency believes, albeit with “moderate confidence,” that North Korea has mastered the technology.

I was stationed in South Korea from 1973-1974 with the 2ND ID(Infantry Division)at Camp Casy, about 22 miles from the DMZ.Firefights between American troops and the NKA(North Korean Army)along the DMZ happened almost weekly.Seoul,South Korea(the capital)has a population of +10 million people.Seoul is well within range of NKA long-range artillery dug in deep underground caves near the DMZ.In the event of a war it is estimated that conservatively 100 thousand South Korean civilians would die if the North attacked the South. There are also approximately 5000 American troops plus 2000 dependents stationed in Seoul,South Korea and about 29,000 troops in all South Korea. These would also be targeted.I love it when some pimple-popping punk whose only experience with war is playing HALO jumps up and cries "Let's go bomb the motherf*ckers!!"I believe that people who think that way should be drafted, sent out without ANY training to be a bullet magnet.Yes,we would win...but hundreds of thousands (if not millions)of innocent people would die,get wounded,or have their lives destroyed.I know..I've been there. Why is it our job to protect South Korea?

Other then the US just being the big stupid kid on the play ground that the smart kids get to fight their battles.

South Korea is a rich nation. They can afford their own defense.

Why is it our job to protect any other country? Why was it our job to protect West Germany and Western Europe during the cold war?Why should we protect those countries that we promised to protect,or our allies? Why did we form NATO and SEATO to protect smaller countries?Because we promised that we would, that's why.And I am sure that the South Korean Army would bare the brunt of the fighting...and take the most casualties. And FYI there are KATUSAs...Korean soldiers augmented to serve with the U.S.Army in South Korea. In my squad there were four of them.

And as a result, we're broke and they are laughing all the way to the bank with the money they saved by not investing in their own defense.

The US raised its nuclear alert status Friday, April 12, to DEFCON 3, stating “There are currently no imminent nuclear threats against the United States. However the situation is fluid and can change rapidly.” North Korea is expected to launch a test missile around April 15. Contradicting the White House, the Pentagon reported: “North Korea probably has nuclear weapons that can be mounted on ballistic missiles.” China has mobilized its military and is massing near the border with North Korea.

Super.

Let's bring our troops home then.

Could the Afghan civilian police be deployed to North Korea to take care of this mess?

They are well trained, inexpensive and asking for new opportunities to demonstrate their wares..
