Hi all,

The one great thing about this weather is that the skies are crystal clear. If it's dark where you are and you can stand the cold for a minute, go take a look at the stars. It almost makes me feel full of holiday spirit. Pretty close anyway.

Indeed. Part of me growls at this weather, but the larger part enjoys it because...this is what winter is supposed to feel like! One of my favorite movies has a line referencing Christmas that says:
"What eyes those wise-men must have had to find a new one on that night. Or perhaps there were less stars then."
50 bonus points to whomever can name that movie.

PS "Kincky McFeely" makes me flash onto Mr. Rogers (RIP). You don't play with hand-puppets, do you?

Amen! This bitter cold is what winter is supposed to feel like! I love taking a deep breath & letting it soak into my bones - not hunching or fighting it. (Okay, after I wimp out, I go inside & have hot tea. Civilization is good!)

Did you see any Geminids last week?

50 Bonus points to whomever can identify this quote from one of my favorite movies....

Why is it the best of the sky's offerings are in the midst of winter. Last year we travelled to Alaska for the northern lights,it snowed the whole time and never saw any.{{my av is a pic of Fairbanks}} This year it was fantastic right out my window, the flares were very active. I saw a few Gemenids but they were not too active.
What's better than staying up until 4 am to lay in the freezing dead grass and stare at the sky? HAH, my neighbors think I'm nuts!!

I tried to find the qute but couldn't the only thing I thought of was 'MIB'? probably not .

Never been to Alaska, although I've spent time in some other mighty cold places (geographically, and psychologically). I have been far enough north to enjoy the all-night glow that's in the sky during summer months. No taste for travel alone, nor for lying on any ground alone. Being snuggled in a double sleeping bag with a sweet woman to look for meteors, or just to enjoy the beauty of a starry night sky, is one of the few pleasant dreams that I have left.

Said by Peter O'Toole as Henry II in the Lion in Winter. Yes I do play with puppets, but only when they're soapy.

NippleFreak- Do you have freakishly sensitive nips or just love nips a freakish amount. I grew up in Glenside, btw.

I too know those cold places but I don't care if I look like an idiot freezing out there; however it would be nice to generate a bit of body heat in a sleeping bag {reminds me of the *M*A*S*H* episode w/ Hawkeye and Hotlips trying to keep warm}. I enjoy travelling by myself, or used to but I have my son as a sidekick so wherever I go he goes if he wants to or not. He was not into going to Alaska until we got there, it is the most beautiful place I have ever seen. We're both anxious to go back in the early fall . The only sour spot is the eleven hour trip. When your flying in over Denali the perfect definition for breathtaking stares you in the face.

Oh Kincky McFeely, I think I'm in love!

50 bonus points for you for getting the quote!
(Do you also like that movie or did you google the line?)

Ohh, I've never been to Alaska... but I want to! Alaska, Australia & Wales/Scotland before I kick this mortal coil. That's not too much to ask, is it?

Perhaps if we continue having get-togethers we could share an eve staring at the sky when the weather warms. Perseids in July... waddya think? (BYO Sleeping bag!)

That's a great idea! There are several places they have starwatches also,Churchville nature center is one I think. :rose:

Yup, HellBaby, they do 'em at Churchville Nature Center, which is a fabulous place for many outdoor adventures. But I bet we could meet at a local park & do as well on our own (I can find my way 'round the sky) unless you wanted the fire & 'smores that come after a Churchville program!

(And I'm not sure what Churchville's policy on sleeping bags is!)

Heck, we could even coax NippleFreak out on a camping trip! Ohh! Persieds at Rickett's Glenn or a dark Upper Bucks State Park - cool!

I love camping! My son and I went every fall to Marshalls Creek until two years ago{the closer I got to 40 the harder it was to do all the work myself}we always had a blast though, saw awsome stars once, mostly sporadics but they were great:D

Hey Lilyfeet

That was one of my favorite movies back when, a bit like Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf by way of murderous normans. Excellent cast, even has a young Anthony Hopkins. O'Toole and Hepburn are just perfect together.

My favorite lines: "Of course he's got a knife, I've got a knife, we've all got knives. It's 1183 and we're barabarians. " "I rode bare-breasted halfway to Damascus and damned near died of windburn."

I also saw it as at the Forrest theater with George Peppard as Henry, and I think it was the mom from Webster as Eleanor. Kept expecting to hear, "I love it when a plan comes together."

Some other favorite movies-
Lawrence of Arabia
Life of Brian
Black Robe
One flew over the Cuckoos Nest
Amadeus
Braveheart
Master and Commander: Far Side of the World (silly title, good movie)

I'm always up for lying out uinder the stars. Another good spot is the appalachian trail section on blue mt called 'bake oven knob'. Easy hike in, usually no one there at the excellent camping site, and you have the whole sky 360 to look at from way up atop the rocks 800' off the valley floor. I'll bring my own bag if you insist, but remember it gets cold up on those ridges.

Hey there Kincky-
Congrats on the 50 bonus points! Not only did the film introduce a young Anthony Hopkins, but if you remember the fey French King...? That was a positively teenage Timothy Dalton (a short-term 007). I, too, saw George Peppard at the Forrest in the role of King Henry. And that was no lady, that was his wife (as Eleanor). Was not impressed - too much bravado in Peppard and not enough intelligence. His wife, IMO, was worse. Her cadence, inflection and timing was mostly Hepburn's from the movie...the chick borrowed the soundtrack as opposed to performing the role. (Getting off soapbox now.)
Oooh, the AT - I think I know the spot...are there blueberry bushes to the North and Sunfish (?) Lake nearby? Let's go! Well, actually, let's go in July when it's warm & the Persieds are due. That way, we can actually attempt a Camping Munch! (And why not?? I once belonged to a book club that camped in the Pine Barrens to reviewed the double feature of John McPhee's The Pine Barrens & Carlos Castenada's ..oh, damn! I forget the name of the magical mushroom trippy book. Too much fun, I guess!)
Bed Time. Waves & Holiday smiles to all.

I think the Castaneda book was called something like 'A Yaqui Way of Knowledge.' At least that's the one I read. McPhee's great, ever read 'In Suspect Terrain'? It's largely about PA geology.

Stupid question time: what's a munch? The only web references I've seen are about food.

Hellbaby- I like the quote in your sig about not choking on the bone, what's it from?

Achhh, my neighbor just called from the airport. Her flight to Ohio was cancelled and she needs a ride. So here I go.

*invokes Christmas spirit*

'Cause it's cold! I know - I've done it! (Though yesterday & today were incredibly mild.)
Since I don't think I'll be able to get near the computer tomorrow, I'll say it now:

Dear NJGuy, Philly, VG, NippleFreak, 'BamaGirl, Hellbaby, Kincky McFeely & all the rest:

Have a wonderful night on this Christmas Eve eve, a wonderful day of finishing touches & antici.....(say it!)..pation tomorrow and a Holly, Jolly, magical & merry Christmas on Saturday. May you be gifted with patience, love and a dash of the miraculous.

It has been a pleasure chatting with all of you & I send out a Chrismachanukwanzaka hug and a twinkling smile to you all.

Dear Kincky-
Carlos Castenada - The Teachings of Don Juan. Came to me last night in a dream when the wolf spoke my name. Seriously, I googled it 'cause I couldn't remember. :)
Read many McPhee (was a prof at Princeton, y'know) but not that one. Got his book on Shad for Christmas last year. Favorite is the Birch Bark canoe. Fascinating, detailed writer. Bet he'd be great to while away some time with, listening to arcane facts and info 'bout area history.
A Munch is a meal (lunch or dinner) of those 'in the life style' that takes place in a public place with attendees wearing 'normal' clothes. It's a basic meet & greet, support, info group for those in the BDSM/Leather community. Often sponsored by a local chapter of some group & designed to welcome any & all.
My question - what does PYL mean? I've seen it but cannot figure it out. (Guess I should go to a munch & figure it out!)
'ho, 'ho, 'ho (well, I can be, with the right man...)

That is the best rendition of Ho, Ho, Ho I have heard in a long time. :D Eastern PA must be a fun place. Maybe it is time for a road trip.
