Hi all,

Over the weekend I submitted a story, only for the pending clock to reset the next day. This is far from my first time submitting a story, and I know this has happened before, however I was wondering if anyone knows why this happens? Is this an indication of anything?

Any insight would be appreciated!

Thanks

This has happened to me every time I've submitted. The prevalent theory seems to be that it means that it's passed through some level of automated review and is waiting for approval, but no one knows for sure.

On a completely separate topic, may I message you directly? I know you don't know me, but one of your stories that I came across (and really liked!) has a number of contextual similarities to a WIP of mine, and I was hoping you might be willing to consult. I can explain more there. And no pressure. As I said, I know you don't know me and have no reason to want to help. Either way, thanks for the story.

Sure. Go for it

Every time my pending clock has reset, or at least every time it has reset and stayed pending long enough for me to notice the change, it has resulted in a lengthy wait for publication... usually in the seven to fifteen day range. I've typically messaged Laurel about it; sometimes that resulted in very quick approval of the languishing story, but not always. If it's been more than three days since the reset, it may be worth sending her a note. If it's been more than fifteen days, definitely send a message.

I had something really weird with my pending clock happen. I submitted a story late on Sunday evening, 2/15. The next day, the 16th, the pending clock finally posted a date - 2/15! This morning it changed to 2/18, so I think it'll work out, but that was a little weird. Hopefully my story will get published ok. I've been lucky so far.

If the date keeps resetting, chances are you will be in pending purgatory for a while.

Yup this just happened to me twice, usually mine are published within 48 hours. I noticed this happened on my latest submission and it was pending for a week so I deleted it and resubmitted on Monday, only to see that today (Wednesday) the pending clock was reset to 5 hours ago... weird. What was your final wait time before it was published?

It still hasn't been published. It has been almost a month. I messaged Laurel after 15 days, but no response. Currently, the stories are both stuck in limbo. I posted them on another site and both were approved there. It is getting to the point where I may just stop posting here altogether.

If your story is STILL pending then it hasn't been rejected. It is just not in the queue (and never was) for some unknown reason. I would just delete the submission from the server completely (you do have your own copy on your own computer, right?) and re-submit the exact same file. That should probably get it into the queue.

The fact that nothing happened and laurel never replied, speaks volumes. That's pretty rotten.

That's so strange. Did your story include any links? Mine is the first one I've submitted that has a link in it (to previous chapters). I'm wondering if this may be causing a manual review to be triggered

Possibly. Although, if you're a new writer, every story gets a quick review for content and basic technical compliance. For more established writers there's appears to be a fast-track.

If you're submitting chaptered stories, and you title them correctly, there's no need to add links - the site runs an algorithm that joins them together automatically.

Title Title
Title Title Ch.02
Title Title Ch.03
etc.

Or:

Title Title - Annie
Title Title - Barbie
Title Title - Charlie

I copied and pasted it from a word file. Do you really think it just got lost? That seems hard to believe. I’ve gotten 33 stories approved over the years and never had one slip through the cracks before.

It does seem hard to believe, yes, but in the last year many many people have reported the same issue as you, waiting weeks for approval and nothing, then deleting and resubmitting gets them approved in a couple of days.
