Sixty years ago today, June 4-7th 1942, American bombers finished sinking the Jap main carriers that carried out the attack on Pearl Harbor. At the same time, a Jap task force bombed Dutch Harbor, Alaska.

Thankyou to those that gave their all so long ago, and to those that are exacting payment in blood for 9-11.

The battle of Midway was a turning point in the Pacific Theater of World War II, and there is no denying that the battle for the Pacific turned at that point.

But, "Jap" isn't really appropriate. It was a term invented around the time of WWII to refer to the enemy.

One of my dear friends is a "Jap." She, and so many others like her, were neither consulted, nor guilty, of promulgating the war-frenzy that permeated Japan in the 1930's.

It is more a cultural thing, the sort of patriotism that led the Japanese people to follow their leaders into a ruinous war is not unlike the jingoistic patriotism exhibited by Americans following our President into a "War on Terrorism." This "war" is used to justify all kinds of infringements on our civil leberties, yet the American people are called unpatriotic, or worse, if they point out that some provision of "Homeland Security" is in in violation of our Constitution.

Couldn't agree more.

LC, I know you are trying to do a good thing by remembering the sacrifice of others, however just take time to think about what you are saying. (i already pointed out an oversight with your d-day post)

Yes Yamamoto knew what would happen since his statement after Pearl Harbor "I fear that we have awaken a sleeping giant."
But the Japanesse were under the thumb of the General Staff at the time and the Emperor had very little real power. The General Staff of Japan had delusions of old Japanesse way of life. That delusion was finally dispelled at the end of the war. During the time between Pearl Harbor and VJ day to many good men lost their lives on both sides.

The "Japs" have a culture flaw that makes it quite hard for them to admit defeat hence the reason the Pacific Theater was a bloody as it was. They will fight to the last man for the most part although there was a quite a few that surrendered. Mostly low ranking ground troops that really didn't want to be there to begin with. National Pride or Honor meant the world to the Japanesse in WWII and in some part still does today. I don't think we can fault them for that.

I salute our boys that went into harms and thank them for my freedom but I have also let the history lay in the past and don't hold grudges against someone that had absolutely nothing to do with the war.

You can be as "Politically Correct" as you want, I'll be my way. Maybe you didn't grow up with a Father having nightmares every night about taking hit from the Japs. Maybe you want to appease the bastards that have not apologized, nor took responsibility for the Pacific war, nor the rape of Nanking, or using Korean female civilians for pleasure girls for the soldiers! Maybe you want the approval of the people who used American POW's for biological research and torture, that would gross out Dr. Mengle! Maybe you want your head patted by the people that still refer to us in their language as "Barbarians!"

Those veterans that were lucky enough to come back from World War II alive deserve way more than a "thank you" from anybody that benefits from this free society, and the ones I've met and talked to never complained, whined, or spoke at length about the hellish experience they went through so that we can live the way we do.

Lost Cause, what do you do all day, watch the "History Channel" and play with your G.I. Joes?
