Parking tickets.

So auto tickets are going up in the area, I just saw on the news. They interviewed drivers and of course, all the drivers were bitching and moaning about tickets already being too high, parking, speeding, etc.

Are they dumb? That's what they get. What right do they have to bitch when it's their bad decisions that get them such tickets?


Anyhow.

Cuz the cops pull over the poor people trying to find multiple infractions (insurance, registration, license) and/or fugitives. They throw the book at them, many times that poor person can't raise enough to pay the judge. Next time the police have warrants on them and the late charges multiply the fines. That poor person very well could lose their job because of a stint in jail over a stupid traffic violation. It is all an effort to further marginalize certain people, the biggest goal is to scare them from casting a vote against the conservatives because they are definitely PRO-POLICE(-state).

if you don't have multiple infractions.. you won't get a ticket. That means.. don't speed, wear your seatbelt, make sure your car is street legal and make sure you have insurance.. etc.

You can't get a ticket if you aren't breaking the law.

I lived in the historic part of town for a while, and the street sweepers would run according to a schedule one night a week. My street was Saturday night, 3am to 6am. My area also happened to be an overcrowded, area, with too many cars for the available spaces. It was an odd coincidence that the sweeper schedule coincided with the time the bar crowd was coming home to park. Half of the cars on Saturday night would get ticketed.

In the richer neighborhoods in mid-town (Ardsley Park, for example, a less youth-oriented neighborhood) there is no penalty for parking in the sweep zone.

There is a method to the madness.

I'm not one of the poor, marginalized people and I ride my bike a lot. LA, NYC, DC, Dallas, etc have a heaping lot of them. They pull over crappy cars and bust out tail-lights and say that is why they're being stopped. It's a racket, that coupled with the random armed roadchecks, and Ashcroft tactics is quickly turning this country into a policestate.

I used to get parking tickets at work... now I park at the garages, and any time I see the meter reader, I give them a big smile and flip them the bird.

You can so get tickets without breaking the law.

I was just in Daytona, Florida and got a ticket for SPEEDING of all things when I was in the slow lane driving almost TEN MILES UNDER the speed limit because I was looking for a particular address.

The cop saw me, he saw the car I drive, he saw the Pennsylvania plates, he saw a mark, a way to get one ticket closer to his quota.

I could easily fight the ticket and win. If I would go back to Florida for the court date they would set for me in a month, when their is no possible way for me to make it.

Don't try and tell me cops don't give out tickets for no reason, that is the biggest line of bullshit I have ever heard on this board.

I have gotten tickets for:

Tinted Windows (legal in PA) Reason: I won't be able to see other motorists.
Chrome Wheels (legal in PA) Reason: Distracting to other motorists.
H.I.D. Headlights (It came that way from the factory) Reason: The officer couldn't take his eyes off the light.

I fought all of those and won, but I should have never been pulled over for any of them, much less got a ticket.

I live in nyc and the tickets are going up to over a hundred dollars....that's a ridiculous amount of money for forgetting to move your car so they can clean the street or for missing your meter by 5 minutes.

When Mr Freaky did is stint with the locals and the counties.. they didn't give out "no reason" tickets.. hell they don't even have "quotas". They aren't punished or rewarded for the amount of tickets they give out.

So don't tell me that ALL cops do it!

The law's the law...but sometimes the law is stupid. Like the law that says it's illegal to possess pot, but not to buy it or to smoke it. Just ridiculous. And if the ticket were something like 25 dollars, that's one thing, but 100? That's just abusing the system...NYC has a huge deficet and they see us tax payers as people they can suck dry for money.

Also, if I could not have a car, I would. Unfortunately I live 2 miles from the subway and need my hunk of tin to get to the subway. I miss the days w/o car insurance and weird noises and such.

actually the cops in my teeny home town give out tickets and stop people out of boredom. Luckily there are only 2 squad cars on patrol at any given time...once you've seen them you're home free.

It's a priveldge I'd happily pass on if I lived closer to the subway.

And as a second thought...I do have the right to bitch about damn near anything and everything...first amendment rights. And I vote, I serve on juries, I write my congress critters (as binkly calls them), I'm protesting the war on Iraq this coming sunday...I've done my part to earn that right.

I never said it was a right either. I have earned my fair share of tickets, when I first got my current car I got a MONSTER speeding ticket. I had to go to high-speed traffic court, pay a big lawyer bill, pay big fines and still lose my license. There is nothing in the world like paying car payments and insurance on a brand new car that you can't even drive. I payed and still pay way more than a normal driver to drive.

I know why I get pulled over, and it has nothing to do with my driving at all. They see me, they see my car, I get pulled over. They make the rest up along the way.

I'm suspect where ever I go in that car. That is why I got rid of the chrome and the tint. Now I'm just less suspect than I was before.

A valid point is the rich don't get buried underneath traffic fines, the poor easily can. $100 parking tickets, court dates at odd times, and/or late fines. Often law enforcement wants people to deem themselves as criminals. It's my policy to never pay tickets, they are all bullshit (in my cases they actually are). I don't do that traffic court Matlock shit like squid, I just avoid 50's and constantly curse them.
